What are the key characteristics of successful innovation leaders?

Innovative leaders do not only have a vision, they are damn good at executing. Without executing you can't make great ideas a reality. The quote by Julian Hall hits the nail on the head. "Ideas are yesterday, execution is today and excellence will see you into tomorrow." You need both VISION and EXECUTION! Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare.

A good leader should be a visionary, an architect, a catalyst and a coach. He will be able to visualise the best in his mind, shape it and communicate it to his stakeholders in an understandable way. A good leader's communication will affect the mind and heart of each stakeholder to get their buy-in. Once they has bought into the vision, the next step for a good leader is how to make it happen. This is where the architect's skills come in. The leader needs to identify the members of the team who are needed for a particular task to enable efficiency and effectiveness. At this point the leader will catalyse the collaboration of the ecosystem players and coaches them to enable focus on the common goal.

Vision is important... getting the vision across to executor level is more important... repeated communication is key for vision alignment, and flexibility on how to execute is what differentiate between realising a vision and settling a vision

Successful innovation leaders possess a clear vision of the future and the strategic acumen to navigate their teams toward it. They articulate a compelling vision that inspires and aligns the team with overarching goals. A well-defined strategy enables them to make informed decisions, fostering a culture of purposeful innovation.

Curiosity is such an important characteristic, as it will allow a leader to quickly find gaps in existing solutions. It will allow for the identification of processes, parts, and thinking that can be improved. Openness is crucial as it allows for adapting and experimenting with new ideas that might have arisen through being curious. It overcomes the stagnation that can arise when having a fixed mindset. It also allows a leader to listen to other members' opinions and strategically integrate them.

In the journey of growth, curiosity plays a vital role. Whether we possess extensive knowledge or are beginners, we remain perpetual learners. Learning is an ongoing process that persists regardless of our achievements or positions. It is essential to instill a culture of questioning within our team, promoting mutual learning from both successes and mistakes.

Unfortunately some lean too much on the old adage of there are "no bad ideas" or you must "learn from your failures". While this may be true to some extent, a visionary leader and the team need to have experience and use the scientific method to quickly dismiss dead-ends and to "predict" how an approach may take hold. Commercial product development is more challenged by time and money than ideas and approaches. Proper development choses a potential approach based on proper reason and facts, then refines, proves and enhances the approach accordingly versus simply "trying it". Translating existing technology into a new use can provide valuable insight into how its use may work in a new development.

Fostering a culture of curiosity and openness is essential for driving innovation and growth within an organization. It allows for the exploration of new perspectives, the challenging of assumptions, and the continuous pursuit of improvement. Encouraging active listening, seeking feedback from diverse sources, and promoting a willingness to learn from failures are all key components of cultivating this type of environment. By embracing these qualities, innovation leaders can inspire their teams to share ideas, opinions, and experiences, ultimately contributing to a more dynamic and forward-thinking work culture.

A good leader becomes the glue that unites his team and the engine that moves its gears. To achieve this, promoting autonomous communication between the different parts of the team is vital. In the same way, a good leader does not micromanage every piece of work, but rather delegates sensibly to his team members, streamlining processes while empowering his colleagues.

Leaders are only leaders if they have followers... Leadership is an art, where one sets one's vision and engage with people to support this vision. Innovation leadership takes this to the extreme. One needs to gain trust and collaboration from others for projects which have never been seen before. This involves an incredible amount of trust, especially in the modern world, where so many innovations occur in software - how many lines of codes need to be written before one can see some output? Now, we are moving into custom-medicines, into Gene editing, etc. Millions, or billions, will be poured into these projects long before gains are seen... this requires the ablity to create cohesive teams in a world of instant gratification.

Innovation cannot be done alone. As successful leaders, we are to rally our team towards these goals. To impart to each member the rationale, the plans, and the goals we're trying to achieve. We should be able to allow our teams to be autonomous and critical in solving problems, working with their plans, and executing said plans. By doing this, we're allowing the team to grow into the mindset of not only doing things as they see but also being critical and expanding their horizons. Finally, as leaders we should also recognize the highs and lows and allow our team to grow from those, to ensure that we're keeping them from stagnation.

To be a successful leader it is essential to master the art of rapport building and have trust on the team. Being realistic and empathetic is particularly very essential. Without collaboration and join efforts of team members it is impossible to achieve missions. Even solo sportsman likes of tennis players, do need a team in the background for big tournament preparation. Leaders and teams are nothing without each other.

Prototyping is one of the most valuable steps in product development. It can yield key confirmation of an idea, approach, process, etc. As a protype is refined it enhances attributes and demonstrates performance. A final protype confirms targeted performance and the ability to meet factors for use and those critical to quality; particularly when shared with partners, potential customers, investors, etc. Lastly, prototyping is a cross-functional activity that manages the transition from the inventive, design phase to the manufacturing phase. During the prototyping process adjustments are made to enhance production methods, reduce cost and improve final quality as well educate and transfer the product process accordingly.

One of the most important aspects of innovation leaders is fault tolerance. The most successful leaders realise wrong directions fast, admit that it was wrong and initiate a correction without blaming anyone. This behaviour creates trust to try new things without being 100% sure that it will be a success. But in the end often enough exactly these experiments contribute massively to innovations.

The most innovative minds are often those with killer creativity who are able to bend and adapt to the winds of change. Mix that with calculated risk-taking, passion, a never-say-die attitude, and empathy, and you've got yourself a leader with a high chance of success.

Resilience is equally vital, as the innovation landscape is marked by challenges and setbacks. Successful leaders persevere through difficulties, learning from failures and using setbacks as opportunities for growth.

Unlike instant motivation, innovation is phenomenon that requires discipline and KAIZEN (continuous improvement) and therefore passion and resilience of parties involved is required. As leaders, we should be ready to accept failures also while on the path of innovation. That's where resilience comes into picture. It is also possible that despite being driven by a sense of purpose, excitement, and enthusiasm for innovation for several years, we still don't achieve anything worthwhile.

Beyond individual traits, successful innovation leaders consider the broader organizational culture. They prioritize diversity and inclusivity, recognizing that varied perspectives enhance problem-solving. Furthermore, they instill a culture that embraces risk-taking and learning from failure, acknowledging that innovation often involves navigating uncharted territory. Lastly, they stay attuned to market trends and emerging technologies, ensuring that their innovation strategies remain relevant and forward-thinking.

Being an innovation leader could be satisfying or frustrating role. Because we're talking about innovation, it’s very difficult to provide a good estimate of the resources, budget and timelines. Apart from having a vision and resources, it must be digested upfront that we may not achieve the exact goal that we envisaged at the beginning. I’d give this disclaimer upfront to the stakeholders, team, managers, resources, and customers. Thereafter, cultivate the best culture, do the best project management planning, scheduling, executing, controlling etc. with timely scheduled reviews just to get the progress and perhaps even re-align our innovation goals and strategy. This way I’d keep the expectations of all concerned parties close to reality.

It's really important to keep focused on what kind of problem you are seeking to solve or what kind of value are you aiming to provide in order to optimize your energy, time and resources, including motivation and resilience. Perhaps you want to integrate AI as one of your resources. Smartly applied it can have a maximizing effect on your innovation solution!

From my experience, a leader who listen and care about and their people can create a psychological safe environment and strong foundation for a trusting team. Linking back to empowerment, a well motivated team is a key ingredient for a successfully innovative leadership.
