1 What is a resilience maturity model?

A resilience maturity model is a tool that helps you evaluate your business resilience across different dimensions, such as strategy, culture, operations, and governance. It typically consists of four or five levels of maturity, ranging from low to high, that describe how well your business can cope with and respond to disruptions. By using a resilience maturity model, you can benchmark your current performance, identify gaps and weaknesses, and set goals and actions to enhance your resilience.

When I work with my clients on improving resilience within their company cultures, I suggest assessing these four aspects of staff behavior: 1) The mental practices: self-regulation, managing change and self-awareness. 2) The physical practices: the promoting of proper sleep, good nutrition and exercise. 3) The community connection practices: which looks at leader-staff connection, team member interaction and communication. 4) The feeding the spirit: which focuses on staff buy-in to the firm's core values, guiding principles and purpose. Tracking these in a maturity model should be done with an eye to making changes along the way that impacts how each element evolves through to maturity and becomes part of the client's company culture.

2 How does a resilience maturity model work?

A resilience maturity model works by asking you a series of questions or statements that reflect the characteristics of each level of maturity. For example, you might be asked to rate how strongly you agree or disagree with the following statement: "Our business has a clear and shared vision of resilience that guides our decisions and actions." Depending on your answer, you will be assigned a score that corresponds to a level of maturity. You can then compare your score with the ideal score for each dimension and see where you need to improve.

Each model works differently. There are some that use the low-high scale and then there's mine that uses a drop-list selection of answers from no maturity to best in class that the user selects the one that best describes their current program. Also, some assessments only look at the disciplines (BC, DR, etc.) while others look at the entire organization. My assessment looks at Organizational Leadership, Employee Awareness, Collaboration, Governance, etc. while also looking at the core disciplines.

A resilience maturity model not only allows you compare your organization to a third party standard, it encourages the conversation of where you really want to be. Not every aspect of your organization needs to be a 5 out of 5 on a maturity model. That is not cost effective, and it may not be what all of your stakeholders require. So some aspects of an organization may need to be a 5 out 5, while less critical functions can even be a 1 out of 5. A maturity model can help drive that discussion.

When making your decision, you should evaluate the relevance and applicability of the model to your business context and objectives, as well as its validity and reliability. Additionally, consider the simplicity and usability of the model, its flexibility and adaptability to your specific needs and preferences, and the availability and accessibility of its resources and support.

In order to use a resilience maturity model effectively, preparation, planning, and ongoing commitment are necessary. To get the most out of this model, involve leadership and key stakeholders in the process and communicate its purpose and benefits. Additionally, select a suitable model that matches your business context and objectives, then conduct a self-assessment or an external assessment to determine your current level of resilience. Analyze the results to identify strengths and weaknesses, as well as gaps and opportunities for improvement. Develop an actionable plan for improvement, assign roles and responsibilities for implementation, monitor progress and outcomes, celebrate achievements and learn from challenges.
