It has helped me in lot of my tier meetings and 1x1 with my direct reports and my manager as well. Real time data in a dashboard is a key. We use PTC's live SMART Capacity tool that gives us real time media fill rate from our lines, and the system throws a lot of insights and prepares us for meetings with talking points and brainstorming sessions.

In my experience, complicated dashboards lead to more support calls, more training and less utilization. Engineers (myself included) can sometimes get caught up in building something that meets their personal sensibilities but stakeholders don't understand at all. I refer to this design trap as "just because you can, doesn't mean you should." Engineers should put their time into elegance of the dashboard (which is very hard to do) and less time in clever buttons and complicated charts.

Before we dive into design and usability or UI/UX, there should be a development strategy and a stakeholder analysis. Followed by partnering with the users to spread “awareness” and get buy-ins related to what the intent of the dashboard is. Along the lines of Agile SCRUM strategy, use short sprints, start small, and then build over it (continuous improvement, Kaizen).

An aspect that is often overlooked is the color scheme of the dashboard. I first use my eyes to tell me when colors or color schemes are a poor choice or a good one. For example eye strain is noticeable when looking at any screen with a red background. The strain is different for a black background but I see some people who prefer this scheme. I always default to sky blue hues for the background as it is quite calming. I also rely on color wheels to make sure colors are going to be attractive near each other when I'm having trouble deciding. You only get once chance at the first impression with a dashboard user. If the colors you choose annoy them... well, you get the picture.
