Always always prepare for the interview. I think appearing for the interview with full pockets always gives an edge. Even if we are not recruited, it does leave a mark on the interviewer. I've got callbacks saying that we loved your commitment to the interview, so it helps. Secondly, if you're a new teacher, do a few dry runs of your teaching. This means preparing for your teaching demo. If you know the topic of the demo, that's excellent. If you don't, pick a topic that creates an impact. Look for ways to do this continuously and have evidence to support this. The school/organisation needs to know they will get the best possible person for the job who takes pride in themselves. This translates to a person who will take pride in the development of students and the organisation and will also allow the organisation to see the value of professional development.

Continuing to develop yourself demonstrates your commitment to the profession. Sometimes I refer to myself as a life-long learner because I take pride in refining my teaching practices and expanding my knowledge of the content I teach. In an interview, highlight any professional development you have done, including school in-service days, conferences, district-wide learning opportunities, and relevant learning in the content you teach. SEL or DEI professional development is always super relevant.

As a school leader, I always asked candidates to explain a time they (a) failed at something and how they handled it and (b) disagreed with their boss on something. The event itself is unimportant- it is more how the person handled the challenge. No one expects perfection but seeing how someone handled a challenge with respect for themselves and others is key.

In my experience as a math bilingual and Special Needs teacher, I face many challenges that range from been the adult in the classroom, at times a nurse, a father figure, a counselor, a big brother, just to mention a few. I work with students that lives in the inner city, they bring a lot to the table, most of them lives a life of nightmare that we only hear of. Last year, one of the students of my school, his brother got shot 12 times, just imagine for a moment how would you teach this student that have just experience a family trauma like this? I have another student that was absent for 2 weeks, when I finally got in touch with the student mother she inform me that they were living in a shelter, this is my reality and world.

Classrooms have the potential to form a community. You can model how to learn, how to talk to one another, how to navigate disagreements, how to be supportive, and how to hold others accountable. It is truly a miraculous space. Kids don’t learn because they are in school. Kids learn because the feel safe, loved, excited to ask questions and seek answers.

What can you offer to the extra-curricular space? Making connections with students not only fuels you in the role, it invests into the character of your students.
