I think is a dual process, even if the reasoning behind it seems ironic: Is about absorbing the world around you, from trends, fashion, the day-to-day things we see in common basis, what the majority is consuming, and then, after all that, taking a step back and asking: "What really turns ME on? What is it that I want to do? If I were a customer, what things would ring a bell on me?", and go dive into that.

Waiting for “inspiration” to learn a “trend” sounds painful. Why not actively seek out what is useful, what is in demand, where you can carve out a niche, and put energy into that.

Other things to consider is that I have found more opportunities by being diverse in the styles of art/design that I am able to create. By being versatile, you can more easily meet the client's vision and needs.
