Image compression can also increase the overall compute time. If the compression algorithm is computationally intensive, the decompression process could take longer than loading raw data. This why digital video still has dedicated hardware accelerators (h.264, AV1, etc). One of the best examples of compression artifacts is heavy jpeg compression on the image of a barcode.
