The workload is a key factor when considering staffing. Having an inaquate headcount will increase stress and burnout, increased risk of error, and lower quality of care which reduces patient satisfaction. I do not agree with lower costs, staffing is one of the biggest areas of expenditures in healthcare. In client/patient facing areas, having an excess of staff can be misconstrued as not doing their work.

Not only does staffing shortages impact patient safety especially in high acuity/high volume units like the Emergency Department it also contributes to lower morale and staff burnout. When staff begin to experience symptoms of burnout and low morale - patient safety is greatly impacted.

In a previous role I was tasked with developing and rolling out extended hours care in the market I supported. It took a bit of trial and error to figure out what the sweet spot was where patients were able to get care when they wanted, and where providers did not feel burdened by working these weekend or evening hours. It took a fine tuning of the number of appointments being offered, the types of appointments being offered (i.e. urgent care or follow-up visits only), and the pay differential that providers would be compensated at for extended hours. We were ultimately able to make an ask of our providers that did not feel burdensome, and found that extended hours were successful judging by utilization rates and patient feedback.
