What is an HTML form and how can it help you create user-friendly web pages?

HTML forms allow engaging user interactions by accepting input. A basic form structure includes the <form> tag with attributes defining data transmission. Different elements within capture user information, like <input> fields and <select> menus. For example: <form action="process.php" method="post"> <input name="username" type="text"> <select name="course"> <option>Select course</option> </select> <input type="submit" value="Submit"> </form> This displays text and dropdown inputs. On submit, data transmits to process.php via POST. Key attributes validate and collect input. Forms gather diverse user information and enable intricate web interfaces.

Forms are really important part of a website. It is a section where you can take the input from the user. Some of its use cases are login/signup page , quiz , feedback form and their are more endless use cases.

HTML forms (<form> element) are used to group and structure various input elements and other form controls on a webpage. The <form> element is a container that holds elements like text fields, checkboxes, radio buttons, etc., allowing users to input data. Forms are essential for collecting user information, conducting surveys, and interacting with users on websites.

On a web page, a webform, web form, or HTML form allows a user to submit data that is sent to a server for processing. Because web users fill out forms with checkboxes, radio buttons, or text fields, they can mimic paper or database forms. A real life use case is a basic login & signup page you see on each and every website.

Of all the <input> elements I have worked with, I found the input type : "text", "email", "password" and "submit" to be widely used. All developer should be comfortable with at least these 4. Well "password" is only used for sign-in/up pages but is vital. To name a few attributes which are widely used and I preferably use are : - "value": Most importantly, This enables you to update the field's value so make sure whatever you put up inside this has that input field. - "type": different types have to be specified to have that type like "text", "textarea". - "required": you have to fill these or the form will get rejected. - "maxlength/minlength": Ensure the user does not put too much jargon inside the "textarea" input field.

Input has some famous types but it accepts many options, but you should be aware of availability in all browsers and how they works. Another issue you may have with input is localization. For eastern languages like Persian, Arabic or Hebrew you will have some RTL issues

In my view, an HTML form is a crucial tool in web development for collecting data from users. Creating a user-friendly form is simple—just start your HTML form with the '<form>' element. Inside this structure, figure out what type of form controls you need, like <input>, <textarea> and etc., with these controls users can type or choose information. Add styles for responsiveness and validations for security. Wrap it up with '</form>', and before that, you can add a 'submit' button. Hit that button and—the data they entered is collected. HTML forms are user-friendly with straightforward elements like text fields and buttons, promoting ease of use.

Validation is a very crucial aspect. For example if we want a user to enter their email address and submit the form but they entered random numbers, we have to validate the filled form before submitting right? So, for this case type="email" will ensure that the input entered by the user has to be in an email format with @ in the middle of the text somewhere, having correct domain name etc. Another example would be user entering text for an input field of age. So here type="number" will ensure that user entered input shouldn't contain any alphabets.

Form Validation is very important process for checking whether the user input meet certain criteria or rules before submitting its very important to validate form in order to get the type of data we actually want for example if we want the name to be minimum 3 character and it can reduce the chances of inputting wrong or fake data form validation can be done by both client and server side in client side we do it in order to save some unnecessary request to the server side and in server side we do it so no body can bypass the input validations so server side can handle it. Zod is one of the library which we can use to save some lines of code or we can do it using simple JavaScript also

Effective form validation also aids in data accuracy, preventing the submission of incorrect or incomplete information. Css is the basic tool for styling a form The important points to consider while styling forms are - 1. How the style goes with the form container 2. Text Styling 3. Input Box Styling At the end the styling should be done in such a way that it doesn't make the UI and UX part bad, it needs to be simple and nice to see which fullfill the need of the form

Being a frontend developer myself, I would highly encourage people to design forms in a way that it catches your attention. Few places where I believe stylings are important in forms are: 1. Mentioning proper label tags. 2. Adding placeholder values to mark the type of info you want to collect. 3. Input stylings to make your form fields and inputs soothing to the eye. 4. Giving padding and active properties to input field. 5. Having flexbox at your disposal make life so much easier. You want to make name in two different parts "firstname" and "lastname" but inline, add both inputs to a div and make the div flex. 6. CSS properties are like dressing sense, the better your dressing sense, better looking you will be.

Ensure that appropriate client-side and server-side validation is followed for all relevant input fields. Furthermore, ensure that the relevant HTTP Verb is enforced. For instance, a form submission that uses POST should not be able to perform the same action using a GET request. Additionally, ensure that a rate-limiting mechanism is implemented on the submission action, by using a mechanism such as a captcha when potential abuse is detected (i.e. attempts to submit large number of requests in a short period of time). Lastly, ensure that all appropriate PII/NPI data masking is in place for sensitive fields.

One thing that his article doesn't mention is event listeners. Almost all forms have them and they're a critical piece of the puzzle when it comes to capturing user input. An event listener is a function or a piece of code that "listens" for a specific event to occur on a particular HTML element. When that event occurs, the associated function is executed. So to make a user friendly experience, a proper UI should be there for the forms along with oroper validation. Intuitive error messages and labels should be there to make users understand what is going on. Lastly There should be a proper alignment of fields to make it easy for user to proceed.
