What is the future of generative models in the architecture industry?

Generative design is very attractive to architects. It seduces them with the apparent infinite design power. However, to leverage generative design in architecture, you should understand that you need solid knowledge of construction, building codes, accessible design, and other topics. If you start interacting with generative design without having a clue of what's feasible and what's not, you will only have a video game. Generative design is powerful, indeed. Yet, it doesn't give you knowledge. It amplifies it.

So far the usage of generative models seems to be centered mostly in enhancing presentations, delivering better visualisations. The other usage I see is for rapid prototyping a greater number of initial design variants based on human input, to be used internally in an office of architecture. The attempts at actual AI-only design seem to be - so far - lacking. The third option that I am expecting to be quite useful would be checking designs for code compliance, maybe even outlining the major envelopes of possible designs....though this also is not yet quite where it needs to be.

Generative models offer a powerful tool for architects to explore design possibilities. Using algorithms, architects can generate multiple design variations quickly, allowing for innovative & unconventional forms. These models can consider constraints like structural integrity, energy efficiency & aesthetic preferences, thus providing a wider design space.

Ultimately, the market will favor those who utilize these advanced tools, making it imperative for architects to integrate generative models into their practice.

Generative models excel at optimization, making them ideal for creating sustainable & energy-efficient designs. They can simulate various environmental conditions to suggest optimal materials, orientations & layouts, reducing energy consumption & environmental impact. This capability aligns with the industry's push toward sustainability & green building practices.

As an architect specialised in eco-friendly building, I so far see only a very limited use of generative models in enhancing designs to be 'greener' - at least for the majority of 'regular' buildings. The major roadblocks preventing better buildings are not the designs....but outdated building codes, the massive inertia of the building industry, the constant fear of potential clients of anything not yet tested thousands of times. Add to that the general lack of awareness of the urgency for and the massive positive impact of an eco-friendly building. And yes, this is currently possible _at cost_, delivering a building cheaper in upkeep and with a better interior climate.

Generative models can facilitate collaboration among multidisciplinary teams. By integrating with architectural software, these models can provide a unified platform for architects, engineers & contractors. This integration enhances communication & reduces misalignment during project execution. The future of architecture may involve more customized & personalized spaces. Generative models allow architects to tailor designs to specific user needs & preferences while still maintaining structural & aesthetic coherence. This level of customization can extend to building components, allowing for more modular & adaptable structures.

Contrary to the initial fear of 'AI will take away our jobs' it will be the architects who will be able to wield AI as tool to be integrated into the design phase, in technical detailing, in code compliance - and likely seveal other areas. So both students of architecture and practising architects will (have to) learn how to deal with and how to use these systems. I suspect that AI usage in different areas will also develop into a specialised field that may hire out their expertise to 'regular' architects.

Despite their potential, generative models pose challenges, including ethical considerations. As algorithms become more involved in the design process, questions about authorship, accountability, & bias arise. Additionally, over-reliance on automation may lead to a loss of craftsmanship & human creativity.
