1 RAN components

A typical RAN consists of three main components: the user equipment (UE), the base station (BS), and the backhaul network. To understand well the RAN components, I recommend understanding the Wireless and Wireline differences as in the RAN component we need to understand what should be physical and what can be like just software. RAN today may have multiple vendors, but the radio unit (RU) software comes from the same company that manufactures the antennae, while the Distribution Unit (DU) and Centralized Unit (CU) could originate from another company. The disaggregation of hardware and software for the radio access network is known as vRAN. It involves the separation of traditional hardware from the software that operates the base stations, RU, DU, and CU.

2 RAN functions

The main functions of a RAN are to provide wireless access, mobility management, radio resource management, and quality of service to the users. Wireless access refers to the process of establishing, maintaining, and terminating the connection between the UE and the BS, using various signaling and data protocols.
