What are the first steps to take when starting a career in network engineering?

Build a strong foundation in Networking by practicing the following concepts, 1. OSI layers and IP address structure, 2. TCP/IP protocol stack and its header fields, 3. Data encapsulation Process, 4. Network Planning and Designing, 5. Packet flow in LAN and WAN with Routing and Switching. 6. Troubleshooting in different scenarios. 7. Build your own lab setup and practice as much as possible. The more you practice, the more you can gain real time experience.

In my experience, understand the fundamentals of networking is essential. Sound knowledge about physical, data link, network and transport layers of OSI stack is crucial. Also learn to analyze the packet captures in detail will improve the knowledge and help you to quickly troubleshoot the issues.

Get started by learning the foundations of IP addressing, subnetting, Routing, Switching, etc. Then, get your hands dirty by trying to simulate a network topology using tools like Packet Tracer or GNS3, and implementing technologies such as Routing protocols, VLANs, and Access lists, to name a few. Troubleshooting is essential here. Finally, after building up with the fundamentals, try to aim for certifications related to Networking, Cloud, Security, and Dev-Ops. This will further boost your portfolio.

Basics it is what always matters, fundamentals of ip addressing, subnetting, OSI layer, TCP/IP operations , NAT/PAT concepts are very important aspects. A solid Understanding of packet flow with combination of routing concepts also provides a strong foundation to one's career in Network Engineering domain.

In my experience this is the most crucial step of becoming a successful and talented network professional. Good foundation is significant to build rest of the carrier. A good understanding of the fundamental about IPv4, TCP/IP stack, OSI reference mode, LAN, WAN, VPN and more, will be a good starting point. After learning these concepts next step is to testing what you learned on a lab environment. There are numerous simulation and emulation platforms available such as Cisco Packet tracer and EVE-Ng. Finally, learning the basics and trying out would help the freshers to develop the troubleshooting skills which are essential for a Network Engineer.

Certifications are valuable to everyone. They allow you to demonstrate your knowledge and can ignite a hunger for further learning in the field. However, it's important to explore beyond just one vendor's offerings. There are many different technologies and vendors out there, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately, the number of certifications you hold matters less than the depth of your practical knowledge. Becoming a network engineer is all about applying your skills to solve real-world problems. So, get certified, but don't limit yourself to one vendor or technology.

Knowledge of computer operating systems, hardware and software. Analytical thinking skills. To be thorough and pay attention to detail. The ability to work well with others. To be flexible and open to change. The ability to think clearly using logic and reasoning.

Certifications such as Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), CompTIA Network+, or Juniper Networks Certified Associate (JNCIA) are valuable in demonstrating your skills and knowledge.

In the domain of Network Engineering, certificates holds a significant value. Not only certificates enhance your knowledge of different vendors and technologies but it also provide an idea about your skills to the employers. There are numerous certifications available for network engineer some are vendor neutral such as CompTIA, some are vendor focused like CCNA. It is imported to target your future carrier goals when you selecting certificate program.

CCNA Is a valuable certification, I've took and renew every 3 years. The exam change every time because the network technology change. First time ISDN was a WAN technology main focused, now IPv6 Is a new implementation with also other routing protocols and api automation. In my point o view and experience Is a must to have for a network engineer.

After learning the basics, getting certified, you want to get hands on experience of real life networks. Even if you dont have a fulltime job, there are simulation tools that can be used to simulate a real life network. EVE-NG, Cisco Labs, GNS3. Build your labs and practise wiith real life network device IOS to gain more mastery and confidence.

First, get a Cisco press book on CCNA certification ….but well before you take any tests learn the basics. go out and buy some equipment. You can get it used online pretty cheap these days. Get some old Cisco routers get some switches and watch as many YouTube videos as you can. Sign up for Kevin Wallace ‘s training courses. They are like gold. Next learn Vmware. Learn what a virtual switch is and how it how it inter your with the network. Don’t go for the certification for at least a year and a half. Take your time and get the experience and the reading in and the courseware. Those are first. Just going out and grabbing a certification is useless unless you really know how to configure the equipment.

In my point of view we Need to do a lot Lab simulation to understand every step of configuration of complex network technology. For eg. First focus on layer 2 switching protocol and then move on layer 3 routing topologies like OSPF and BGP. Understand tunnel protocol like GRE and next configure IPsec VPN. Understand L2/L3 unicast, anycast e broadcast. How Is implemented ACL for filter traffic. Try all MPLS topology implementation First L3 and L2 later. Today Is required to have a Deep knowledge of overlay network protocol like VXLAN and GENEVE so you must understand the SDN principles.

Hands-on experience is essential in network engineering. Set up a home lab, volunteer for internships, or seek entry-level positions to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. Practical experience enhances your problem-solving skills and reinforces theoretical concepts.

Clarity of basic concepts will always be the 1st step in right direction to stay updated on any technology including Network Engineering. With rapid changes and evolution of technology, one needs to continuously learn and keep yourself updated to meet and exceed the expectations of the job. Focus on both hardware (equipment side ) as well as software and applications. Keep learning multiple platforms in the beginning before you converge on specialisation. Self development through certifications, challenge yourself on taking initiatives are other key drivers for staying updated

One of the most important parts of the ‘Stay Updated’ area, is for not only you to be updated, but within large networks, ensure the team/s that will support what has been implemented are updated. TOI’s, accurate low level diagrams, troubleshooting scenarios etc. Avoid the ‘Upside down cone of knowledge’ where vendors, planners, and engineering fully understand what has been engineered (The top of the cone) and the support personnel are left hung out to dry (At the bottom of said cone).

It goes without saying, that the IT industry is moving with giant leaps still today. More BW everwhere, new protocols all the time, new concepts (automation, AI etc..), new interfaces (SDN etc..), new regulatory requirements (security, data protection etc..) will keep you busy. So make it a habbit to subscribe/read the right websites/newsletters/updates. The way is the goal.

Tech is a small world. Cultivate friendships, help others, and don't burn bridges! You will likely see the same people again and again in your career especially if you and they are top performers. As such, don't step on others trying to advance because you might need them to lend you a helping hand as life does what life does.

Very important. Always network with others. The field is too small and there is always someone smarter than you. If you don't know, find someone that does know. In the future, you can always pay them back. Maybe refer them for a job at your company etc..

When I graduated from High School I had no idea what I wanted to do. Some of my interests were computer science, architecture, and mechanics. I started pursuing a degree in electrical engineering and signed up for an elective in computer networking. I found that networking had a bit of everything. Learning Layer 1 like cabling, optics, and hardware feed my electrical/mechanical need to be hands on. Configuring networks feed my interest in computer science. Network design feed my architectural side. Just like that I was hooked on networking, so I pivoted my learning path and career towards networking. The world of networking can be very vast. Don’t be afraid to try something new as you’ll never know what will spark your passion.

Find your niche within network engineering that aligns with your passion. Whether it's security, cloud networking, or wireless technologies, specializing in a particular area can set you apart and make your career more fulfilling.

One thing I regret is not starting in the world of technology at a younger age. Perhaps because I didn't know my interests well enough, or my economic capabilities, but it's never too late to start. I got into this world through networking, specifically Cisco. I thought about giving up one day, but my dreams were bigger than my desire to quit. And big tip: learn cybersec and security in general, that's the future of everything. I'm available always for an approach or connection.

I enjoy puzzles... no two days are the same. I'm constantly learning other things that are related to networking - Firewalls, virtualization, scripting, vulnerability scanning and mitigation. The industry is evolving faster than most can keep up with it.
