Develop a tool/language agnostic understanding of database concepts. This may feel a bit boring at first, but it allows you to understand why certain tools do what they do and the pros and cons of a certain implementation. There’s always going to be another new toy popping up, but by developing a solid understanding of the core concepts you would hardly be overwhelmed by the tide.

Ideally one should start with larger scheme of things and try understand where Database fit in with the overall development cycle. Keep it simple with the functioning and try absorb more around the different data models. Pick a language of your liking and try to be more hands on. Try cut out the noise and the big jargon, you will get to it but a solid foundation of how data flows, consumed or stored, retrieved and used is crucial.

To "begin a career" like this article says you absolutely don't have to "master SQL" or become a master of anything. And you absolutely don't have to know every single vendor product. In the beginning the most important concepts are theoretical like relational database theory and to distinguish yourself from pure analysts or business people you need some edge like knowledge of deployment, installation, backup or maintenance of databases. There are at least two distinct streams the DBA path and the analyst path but if you want to build applications with databases that's another distinct path that needs you to know practical skills of how to work with a database along with design, maintenance and expansion of software.

It's good to read up on normalization but most databases are not fully normalized (it takes too much time and effort with little return). 1st or 2nd normal forms are most common so far

Do a project that solves a real world problem and needs a database. Trust me, there is no better way to understand things without the first hand experience. Pick a project first, develop through it and learn the necessary SQL commands and features as you go through implementing the backend logics.

Understand the internals of a database - Take a few SQL queries and look at the query plans. This will give you an idea of how the query will be executed. You can use this to figure out any inefficiencies in the query and further optimize it using indexes, hints etc. I also would recommend reading through Database Systems The Complete Book. The pdf should be available online. Understanding different algorithms that execute the SQL operators - join, filter etc will give you a great foundation towards database development and engineering.

For me, there was no plan of becoming DBA, I took first opportunity I've got in banking IT and started to learn and keep up with Database Administration. You need to be patient, and for sure good mentor to guide you through first year of your career. I was lucky to have one of the best guys in country for Oracle Databases to learn from, and after 5 years, if I have to describe DBA career simply, it is for sure word "doublecheck".
