For writing projects, I actually recommend that you charge by the word, not the hour. If you work quickly — e.g. you write a 1,000-word article in a few hours — you don't want to be penalized for that by not being able to charge a fair market rate for the content.

When it comes to me, Charging on an hourly rate and on a per contract base, i will choose per contract base. In my previous experience as a freelance wordpress developer and web designer, on upworks, i realised that most clients think when they pay an hourly rate, they get cheap labor so they turn to hire people with low hourly rate fees, but that is not the case, how much you pay determines how much u will get. I prefer to charge per contract base because i have to factor various costs to ensure that i have the peace of mind to fully focus on doing a quality work for the client so that the client will be happy to refer me to other clients or bring in more projects in the future.
