we need to figure out the regression test cases carefully so that we will cover the core functionalities of the application after we defined and created regression tests we need to review the regression test cases more often and we need to make the changes accordingly and it should be a collaborative effort with test engineers, end users, and other stakeholders, also we can limit the regression time throughout the time the regression test cases count will get increase eventually the execution time will get increase it.

I agree, you need to choose the tool and framework that fits your needs. Not all tools work for all teams/ organizations and hence not choosing the right tool could impact the team from yielding the right benefits of automated testing.

Choosing the right tools and frameworks is a crucial part of test automation. Every tool has its features. I would like to highlight a couple of real-time scenarios that I went through. For API automation, we are using Postman and SOAP UI tools, and both tools have high demand in the market. Postman does not require extensive coding knowledge, whereas SOAPUI requires decent coding knowledge. Similar to that, we can add more points when comparing tools, but the important point is that we should choose the right tool and framework by thinking about how other team members can also pick it up and work with minimal training. Consider other points like community support, license cost, and many more metrics when selecting tools and frameworks.

Documentation and reporting are what determine the final outcome of any testing (both manual and automated). In real-time, we use the API tools documentation (Postman documentation), in which we articulate the scope of the API, the authentication that we use for our API, and the steps to upload the collections and detailed information of the test assertions. Introducing logger functions and comments can be used to explain assertions and make them more readable. Reports with detailed information are very useful; they should have as many details of the test execution with a clear summary as what we require for test automation.

Team collaboration is key practice for regression testing. I would say that collaboration among team members, BA, PO and developers is extremely important for successful regression suite design. Ensure all these regression assumptions (few scenarios which cannot be tested using automation) and dependencies are documented for effective collaboration among teams.

Regression testing is a one-time investment. It requires additional effort in terms of cost and resources, but we will reap the benefits of it when we design a good regression suite. The important challenges in Regression testing are stringent timelines. It is required (resources) and we required a stable environment, and we should understand the requirement clearly most of the time. A dedicated test automation team will work on regression test suite creation, but they might not understood the functionality clearly, then there are chances the regression test suite may not cover the core functionality or intent of the test.

If an application undergoes frequent changes, automated tests can save time; otherwise, manual testing may be more efficient. Implementing automated testing demands significant upfront investment in tools, infrastructure, and personnel. Maintaining the test suite, ensuring coverage of critical functionality, managing test data, and handling test environments are crucial aspects. Additionally, managing the execution time of automated tests is essential to prevent delays in the development process.
