All the mentioned formal tools are mandatory, to which I add: listen to the workers closest to the work. They are the eyes, ears (and sometimes noses) of any quality organization. What they see which is out of the ordinary is the first set of clues that processes may be falling out of control. That means the QC manager must have mechanisms in place where those listening opportunities can take place.

Quality control managers need to have strong managerial skills to plan, organize, and coordinate the quality control activities and resources in a manufacturing facility. Managers need to get to know their teams, the processes they are responsible for and how to avoid catastrophic failure or chronic problems. They must also lead the team to understand why and how failings occur and share the findings with the relevant groups. Identify any gaps in skills and to invest in training and upskilling the team.

4 Analytical skills

Quality control managers need to have sharp analytical skills to collect, process, and interpret data and information related to the quality of products and processes in a manufacturing facility. They need to be able to apply statistical techniques, such as sampling, testing, and hypothesis testing, to evaluate the quality characteristics and parameters of the products and processes. They need to be able to use graphical and numerical methods, such as charts, graphs, tables, and diagrams, to present and visualize the data and information. They need to be able to identify trends, patterns, anomalies, and root causes of quality issues and problems. Analytical skills enable quality control managers to make informed and evidence-based decisions and recommendations for quality improvement and control.

Understanding of the process and the steps from qualifying the raw material up to quality marking is key. Some characteristics come from the RM. Understanding the Quality range and being able to measure them while limiting production delays is key. In my experience of steel pipes for example, we maintained our own quality internal names and adjusted our production Targets to ensure that if we failed to reach certain properties, especially for premium products, we would be able to sell the product as another type and even though we would spend more money in the production process we would not end up with unsellable product. Only after the quality test is passed can the product be assigned to the customer order.

Quality control managers need to have a mindset and a skill set for continuous improvement, which is the ongoing and systematic effort to enhance the quality of products and processes in a manufacturing facility. They need to be able to apply quality improvement methodologies, such as Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA), Six Sigma, Lean, and Kaizen, to identify and eliminate waste, variation, and defects, and to optimize efficiency, effectiveness, and customer satisfaction. They need to be able to initiate and support quality improvement projects and initiatives, as well as to measure and monitor the results and impacts of the changes. In order to be an effective Quality Control Manager(QCM), one needs to have a deep understanding of the final product desired quality, how to monitor and measure that quality and what & how the Materials, Man, Machines & Methods directly or indirectly affect the desired output quality. By understanding this, the QCM has to identify the critical control points(CCP) and establish control parameters with acceptable tolerance limits, monitoring & measurement tools, competent personnel that will keep track and ensure preventive & corrective measures and taken at all times. The QCM has to also be competent in carrying out statistical process analysis periodically based on data collected at the CCP to ensure process capability.
