What are the essential skills and competencies that you look for in a quality control team leader or manager?

Quality team leader must be knowledgeable and have complete understanding of processes. If the Quality Head doesn’t have sound knowledge he cannot suggest anything appropriately. This ultimately disturb the complete cycle. Visionary is always one aspect of any leader whether in Quality or any other area. He must have well define vision for the department which he must develop based on the findings within the department and organization. Building trust among the team. Trust is most important in every leader. Problem solver is also most important part of Quality Leader. This point is directly link with the knowledge point. If leader can provide solutions for the problems which other people unable to find make a person exactly a leader.

A Quality control team leader or manager must have solid technical skills like product development , process control , specifications , regulatory standards, GMP ,HACCP, QMS and Food safety requirements. SPC and root cause analysis skills are very critical in process management and continues improvement. He need to have solid leadership skills in managing the relationship related supply and consumer complains to support the business on building agile and sustainable brands to won in the vibrant market and rapid changing consumer demands.

In my experience, knowledge of the data is paramount if you are going to train staff to apply the QC system you have created.

Being a leader or manager requires not just good communication skills, flexibility and an open mind are needed to seal the deal with your team.

When searching for a new leader to bring into a team, this could be evaluated by asking questions about how they navigated conflict in the past. However, the real test is shown in action. Monitor this skill closely while they are new and include training quickly if under par. When developing leadership skills within someone on your team, after laying a foundation of trust in the relationship, ask for their opinions one-on-one to get a better understanding of how they view conflict. Disagree with their opinions, professionally, and test the waters in a safe situation. When they come to you with feedback about things, take it how you would like to see them handle that feedback in the future. Therefore, modelling the behaviours for them.

Everyone has their own process in analyzing data, utilizing a set process and tools is just the beginning. Remaining open to adding and perfecting that process along the way makes for a great quality system that works for all stakeholders.

A quality control team leader or manager can be a large amount of work, promoting your team members will not only provide recognition that is well deserved, it will make your process more efficient and keep the workload balanced.

I cannot talk enough about flexibility and an open mindset. continues improvement can be acquired when you learn from your team and apply the lesson they teach you along the way. The team members that are truly in the trenches are the ones that you will rely on to help you improve the systems.
