Durability and maintenance happen on two levels. Obviously, the first level involves the system itself, how it "ages" over time, and the level of support a vendor offers. All too often, planned obsolescence is part of systems today, and must be considered. In addition, consider the durability and maintenance that the library's funding authorities and oversight boards will offer. In other words, do penny-pinching board members see a system as a one-and-done expenditure, even as you passionately try to inform them that this is a long-term commitment? Systems aren't free. Even computer shareware that was popular in the 1990s required time (an expense) to learn how to use it and maintain it. Today, systems require ongoing support.

I worked at a public library in the late 1990s where we finally decided to put security strips into the reference and VHS video collections (before then, people brought empty video cases to the circulation desk and staff had to retrieve videos). When the gates were installed, a long-time patron asked "Why?" I explained. She replied, "People steal from the library?" Those days are mostly gone, but never underestimate the response a long-time patron may have when you consider making changes. If a patron thinks visiting a library is becoming more like passing through a TSA checkpoint at an airport, they may choose to visit less or protest more. Having talking points ready for the staff to use, if needed, is wise. Keep loyal users happy.

Your best "security system" requires no software updates. It's your staff. An employee who maintains appropriate contact with patrons, stays aware of building activities, and looks for obvious signs, is more effective than any computer system. Case in point: A staff member in a public library I worked at brought to my attention the outer label of a new Fodor's travel book in a garbage can. A patron had removed it, and stole the book. We kept our eyes on the area, and a person was later caught--and trespassed--for doing the same thing. Understand that if a worker is in an environment where they feel their voice isn't valued, they may not share such incidents. They may stay quiet. A good leader wants staff to feel comfortable sharing.
