We know in Save the Children's portfolio of vocational training and life skills, that many youth and adolescents across the globe may not be able to complete their education due to various reasons. VET provides children the chance to develop a future-oriented outlook through life skills development. As more lower-skilled jobs become industrialised and automated, employment opportunities for school drop outs reduce. It is vital for these young people to access alternative training to help them access decent work and provide them with better employment opportunities. In turn increasing their financial stability, ensuring they are more resilient to economic and climate shocks.

4 Challenges and recommendations for VET for green and circular economy

Despite the potential of VET for green and circular economy, there are also some challenges and barriers that need to be addressed, such as a lack of awareness and recognition, alignment and coordination, and resources and capacity. To address these issues, it is recommended to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders, develop and update curricula, enhance professional development of teachers and trainers, increase awareness among learners, and monitor and evaluate the impact of VET for green and circular economy. Doing so can help ensure its quality, relevance, affordability, inclusiveness, effectiveness, and attractiveness.

My experience of VET is focused on digital, technical, education. In this vocational area the most important skill is, arguably, adaptability to change. A focus on the high quality delivery of a wider variety of technical skills for each learner can form a strong foundation for the future workforce to train with specific technologies more easily. Access to high quality VET, with encouragement to develop a wide skillset, for everyone, wherever they live, is needed now and will organically feed the green and circular economy.
