What are effective ways to showcase your problem-solving skills in interviews?

Based on my experience, we can structure our responses using Situation, Task, Action and Result Framework, describing situation or problem we faced task at hand, action we took to address it and result, Look into instances from Past roles where we have solved the problems. Emphasizing individual contribution to problem solving. Explaining thought process when approaching problem breaking down steps to analyze the problem, identify solution and make decision Focus on problem that had positive outcome and tangible results. Be adaptable to problem solving approach to different situation. Highlight instances were we collaborated with team to solve complex problem, quantifying impact of problem solving effort like cost saving, time saving

Drawing from my own journey of overcoming obstacles and navigating complex situations, I find that the STAR method is an invaluable tool for effectively communicating problem-solving skills. It's not just about saying you're good at solving problems; it's about demonstrating it with real-life examples. By breaking down your response into Situation, Task, Action, and Result, you provide a clear and structured framework for showcasing your problem-solving prowess. As a a rule of thumb, I would always have a couple of STAR stories (rehearsed already) from every job on my resume. Living by the motto, "If you stay ready, you don't have to get ready!"

In my past, I have been tasked with generating multiple reports for site visits. This, to me, would be challenging for any manager to flip through while walking with store associates. I created a 1-page document that had key metrics to allow for a one stop document of sorts that had all the details needed to have a successful walk.

When thinking of the bigger picture, you gain the knowledge needed to create what you need in the moment which leads to a positive outcome. For me, thinking ahead of my boss and his needs has always been the best solution or outcome for when he doesn't always remember every little detail of something he may need. Trying to think ahead of him is the best outcome for ensuring he's able to get the task done.

You read that asking questions during interviews are a MUST. What they don't tell you is that the typical questions they pose you ask to have already been answered during the interview as part of the conversation. With that, you have to dig deep and think outside of the box. For example, I just asked what I hope is to be a co-worker what makes her successful in the role and what would I need to know that would make me successful. Yes, this is a typical question, but bringing in your future co-worker into the equation makes you look as though you truly do care and want that position.

From one who is truly creative at heart. Thinking outside of the box is key to being truly successful in most situations. For me, showcasing the steps I took to create a recognition program and how it made my boss shine puts me one step closer to sealing the deal. I always explain that I do not like to be center of attention. That I like to give that attention to my boss so that they can make the business successful.

One thing I have learned during this round of interviews is that you have to be yourself. I would say that 10 years ago when I interviewed, I do so with a nervous aura about me. However, this time I go into each interview with a smile on my face and the attitude that I am who I am - take me for me or don't. Don't go into an interview being fake and offering up something you are not.
