In order to prevent assessment bias, it is important to identify and avoid potential sources of bias that can affect your assessment practices. These sources can include stereotypes and prejudices, inappropriate or irrelevant content, ambiguous or confusing instructions, cultural or linguistic assumptions, and formats or modes of assessment that may favor some students over others. To reduce the chance of bias, review your assessment criteria, materials, and methods regularly and critically. Furthermore, seek feedback from colleagues, students, and other stakeholders. Additionally, use multiple forms of assessment to capture the diverse learning outcomes and competencies of your students.

Assessment bias in educational institutions is a blight to the whole education system which many a times hinders the growth of deserving students and it is extremely pertinent to remove the same. A transparent continuous evaluation and assessment is the need of the hour. Use of well planned rubrics in every assessment component especially the ones which appear to have more subjectivity is the first and foremost step that needs to be incorporated. Involving peer students into assessment by having some component to be evaluated by them reaps several additional dividends as well apart from removal of bias. A transparent continuous assessment duly notified for visualizing of everyone helps a great deal in eradicating bias.

This means that your assessment should measure what you want your students to know, understand, and do, and not what is easy or convenient to assess. The fourth step to overcome assessment bias is to implement inclusive and equitable assessment practices. This means respecting and valuing the diversity and uniqueness of your students, and providing them with equal opportunities and support to succeed in their learning and assessment. Such practices can foster a positive and respectful learning environment, as well as enhance the academic and social outcomes of your students. To do so, you should ensure accessibility of your assessment for all students, provide reasonable accommodations or adjustments for those who have special needs or requirements, recognize and respond to the different learning needs of your students, and acknowledge and appreciate the cultural and linguistic diversity of your students. This should all be done while maintaining the same learning outcomes and standards for all students, avoiding any bias, stereotypes, or discrimination.
