What are effective ways to improve the listening skills of your ESL students?

The same as every other student, why discriminate? Such an unusual question. I feel you have missed the commonality that is shared by every learner. I started as an esl student.

Use authentic materials. Include varied listening activities. Encourage active listening exercises. Start with pre-listening predictions. Focus on vocabulary building. Repeat and rephrase segments. Incorporate visual aids. Introduce interactive listening activities. Teach effective note-taking strategies. Facilitate pair and group activities. Gradually increase material complexity. Incorporate language games. Provide constructive feedback. Explore cultural context. Utilize technology for interactive exercises.

Give clear instruction your student before you start the audio. Ask if they really understand the instruction or not. Besides that, adjust the audio to be as clear as possible. Most of my students excuse are: the bass is too strong, the audio is too slow or too loud.

This is best practice before any activity for any student. If the student doesn't know what they're doing, how will they do it?

Perhaps pause on data, expectations, and assessments. Humanity is based on relationships, trust, and care. Start by getting to know your kids, their interests, and then find things that connect with them. Perhaps the “we know everything kids need” approach should be reconsidered. Goals and expectations become far easier once relationships are secure, trust is formed, and kids know the teacher/adult wants them to thrive.

Basic Materials Required : * Knowledge of English Phonics. * Blending sounds * blending words Once students get hold of phonics, it becomes quite easy for them to understand what's actually been said. Practicing both sounds of 'th' would be a great start.

One thing I've found helpful is using songs Melody and rhythms make language acquisition a secondary focus so children aren't focused on the fact that they are studying English Following up with a read or writing activity that utilities words from the lyrics is also effective

I agree but, these methods are more effective with students who are at the beginning or intermediate level of L2 proficiency. Whereas pre-production to emergent L2 speakers tend to sit in a silent phase for an undetermined time period and during this time they are engaging in the natural process of listening, therefore listening is a natural skill and the beginning of acquisition of L2. In the other hand, if a student is beginning to speak in L2 by stringing words together then introducing listing skills for understanding and comprehension can be employed; for example providing images while listening to help with word association of what is heard to what is being talking about.

Appreciative feedback and recognition builds someone's sense of being valued. It helps to reinforce positive habits and encourages more of the performance . It improves learner’s confidence and motivates them to learn.

Positive encouragement goes a long way with ESL learners. The sheer delight on their faces when you cheer them on for making the smallest bit of progress, not only increases their confidence, but also makes them open up and feel more empowered to keep speaking, listening, and comfortable to make mistakes which is all the beauty of learning new languages as well.

Making listening activities enjoyable and meaningful is key to keeping students engaged. Try turning a regular listening session into a game show where they have to listen carefully to answer questions or solve puzzles related to the content. It's like a language adventure they embark on! Connecting the materials to their interests and lives is a surefire way to grab their attention. If they're into music, why not analyze song lyrics together? If they love sports, listen to sports commentary or interviews. The more relatable the activity is,the more they will enjoy it.
