What are effective ways to handle job transitions for career growth?

Always start with understanding where you are, where do you want to go, WHY do you want to go before figuring out next steps. Your Why is very important. You should always run towards a new opportunity and not run away from an existing one There will be reasons but ensure you are doing your dodelligence in discovering what is it that you want to achieve next that you can't in your current role or company. Figure out your reasons and rate them. How important they are? How relevant they are. And go on to understanding your gaps and skills. As simon would say, Start with WHY!

Moving employer provides you with an opportunity for personal and professional renewal. It's a fresh start with a clean slate. How do you want to be viewed in your new firm? Decide what type of professional you want to be. What do you want to do differently, and what do you want to do the same? Are there any behaviours that you would like to change? What do you think you could improve on? Be constructive in your assessment.

It is important to have a strategy for the new position/company that is based on an assessment of: the internal politics; your new staff if you have direct reports; meeting key people ahead of time; the goals; and the changes the organization has been through. Just like companies need strategies based on many factors, we need considered albeit flexible plans for how to successfully enter a new job or organization.

This is a controversial contribution to a discussion on a Career Development article...... Many people can look forward to gardening leave as part of their transition between firms. You wouldn't have been offered your new role if you had a significant skills gap, so don't waste your time by obsessing about work. Take a proper break before you start your new job! This may be a once-in-a-career opportunity to benefit from paid rest and recuperation. Some people have bucket lists for their time off, but even if you don't have a list, try to spend your time off doing things you love. After recharging your batteries, you'll be able to approach your new role with the energy and enthusiasm required to be a success.

once you have identified your objectives and your skills figure out where your gaps are and identify if this a deal breaker or can it be learnt don't the job? If it is a deal breaker seek out ways to learn these skills that are required and identify what transferable skills are useful this will show your commitment to continuous development

You don't want to burn bridges and want to leave where on good terms. This helps build your network and credibility. Where possible to focus on developing a good relationship with your current employer before you exit.

Set yourself up for success and understand what does the first 30, 60 and 90 days look like. focus on getting to know who is who. Ask questions and spend more time listening than talking. Being clear and collaborative will a long way to your success.

In your first 100 days, don't try to please everyone or attempt to take too much on. Instead, focus on the activities on which your performance will be judged. And what happens if it all goes wrong? Be prepared to take remedial action and ask for additional help and support from your employer. Stay calm and refocus on what you're doing. Your first 100 days are important, but there are countless examples of employees who have started badly before recovering and going on to have great success.

Keep your mind open to new learning opportunities, seek experiences with other teams including gigs and shadowing to see how they do things in practice and whether it’s something you may also enjoy and that aligns with your development plan. Every experience will give you more knowledge and skills as well as connect you to new individuals and teams and help you to grow your network. Even if an experience doesn’t end up leading to a permanent move you will gain something from it provided you adopt a learning mindset and take a collaborative approach.
