My mentor in personal branding taught me this: you have to get your work out there. No one will know your capabilities until you express it and communicate it with people. Write about topics that you care about then after some time, dig into topics you normally wouldn't write about. These are the things I focused on when I was still a freelance writer - which also gave me room to build more skills as I go along.

In addition to networking and pitching to potential clients, subcontracting can also be a great way to grow your writing business when you're self-employed. This is how I got started--and it's how I got the majority of my work for a long time. While you may not make as much per word as you would working with clients directly, you can get a lot of consistent work this way--and this can help alleviate the financial stress of being on your own while you work toward building your own book of business.

I schedule my own book signings at whatever restaurants, stores, etc…that will let me set up a table. It works! I am working on my newsletter again, and I can get people to subscribe at my table. This gets you out in the public to commingle with your readers and you can build your following for future books.
