What are effective ways to evaluate the impact of a strategy on employee morale?

There are several ways that can impact are: One on one interviews Surveys Key Performance Indicators Observation and Feedback from Managers. In my view it is always important to use Qualitative and Quantitative methods to get comprehensive understanding of the strategy's impact on employee morale.

We have heard a lot about setting SMART goals. It is important that these goals are being set not on the employees but by them. Strategy initiatives if done without people involvement at very early stages, always fails (or stands to fail). IMHO, it is absolutely criminal to write Strategy Objectives in corporate lingo. Defining specific objectives could be difficult, especially if what we are trying to do is Innovation or challenging the status quo. A valid alternative is to assess and align different team members' visions—for instance, a simple but powerful question. We could ask the following. What is the better version of the world we would like to create?

A lot of time surveys and interviews fail because leaders and HR read out from a form. For people to trust the system enough to provide unbiased feedback, they need to feel the engagement from interviewer. This is an essential aspect of any form of data collection. Also, unfortunately, it is often overlooked and misunderstood. The actual purpose of collecting data is to transform such data into insights. It is essential that you understand even prior to collection data which kind of insight you would like to collect.

One thing I've found helpful has been to thank my employees when they bring issues and possible solutions to my attention. Then I try to implement their solutions if possible. If I can, I make sure to recognize them during the next employee meeting as well. It shows the employees that I value their opinions during decision making processes and helps build team morale overall.

Implementing improvements is a wonderful suggestion but I want to take it a step further and blatantly say "take action." Often times I see companies pulse check strategy with surveys and maybe even go a step further and identify improvements to make. Unfortunately, sometimes that is the end of it. This type of cycle can lead to discontentment, employee burnout, and survey exhausting. For a majority of employees actions speak louder than words. You have to focus on actionable items that are visible to your workforce. When you act on those items then you are giving voice to employees, reinforcing strategy, and improving morale.
