Along with knowing your worth and what the market trends are. Know your worth to the company. It is a lot easier for a company to retain an employee compared to hiring someone new. It is a costly process to search, qualify, and train a new one. So keep a list of the impact that you have had on the organization and in your role. Keep a "brag" sheet to refer back to it when needed.

The first and foremost thing you would want to do is, setup a One-on-One with your manager (if it’s not a usual culture in the company). - initiate the discussions by asking open ended questions on how your performance been so far in your current role and if is there anything else the company/manager wants you to do in your current role. - if you receive positive feedbacks for all of your questions, then would be the right time to start discussing about the raise. But instead asking for a direct raise, ask the manager I’m on so and so pay scale right now and I want to get into this next level and how can I achieve that? What do I need to do in order to get to that point. This would definitely help you get to a pay range you want to.

This can be harder than it first appears. Engineers work in teams and you want to be calculated about how you bring up metrics that could be seen as group achievements. Claiming those as your own can come across as throwing your team under the bus. The other side of that is I've had "stretch goals" become expectations. So doing 75% of it is no longer going 'above and beyond', it's missing targets. Document your understanding of your impact to the team, what the expectations are (most companies have an outline of each job title), and how you're exceeding them. I strongly encourage a 1-page template.

3 Choose the right time

Timing is essential when requesting a raise. You should aim to ask when your manager or employer is in a positive mood, open to discussion, and aware of your recent successes. It’s best to avoid times when they are busy, stressed, or preoccupied with other matters. A few good scenarios for asking for a raise include after completing a major project or milestone that displays your capabilities and worth, during or after your performance review or evaluation when you can emphasize your accomplishments and objectives, when the organization is doing well financially or has secured a new contract that boosts its revenue or reputation, and when you have been offered a job with more pay or better benefits from another company.

Foremost, the right time to discuss compensation or performance matters is a planned time. Set expectations on what you would like to talk about, set a time and location to meet, and be flexible with your manager's schedule. When the meeting is planned, you have time to prepare the right questions and your manager has the time to review your performance and not be surprised at the discussion.
