Teams underperform majorly due to lack of communication. I would try & address as below: -Identify & understand the underperformance. Get to specifics as to the root cause of same - is it due to lack of intent/ a capability gap. -Understand from the team on factors deterring our achievement. Have an open conversation with complete transparency, and make it crystal clear on expectations from all of us as a "team". Ensure that the conversation is 2-way. -Work with the team, Jot down the tasks and effectively delegate tasks, based on capabilities; Coach the team as needed. -Set specific targets with deadlines. Collectively meet and review interim progress. Celebrate small successes.

Begin by assessing the underlying cause of the issue and identifying the reasons for its failure. Then, collaborate with your team to generate potential solutions through brainstorming sessions. Foster an open door policy and encourage feedback from all team members. Additionally, implementing a rewarding system is essential in such situations.

As you look and analyse feedback to identify the root cause it’s important to consider 3 organisational lenses: -org design lense: what are the root causes that are related to how are we structured as a team? Are we designing this org. and teams according to customer/market expectations? Do we have the right strategy? Is there a gap between org. Design and strategy? -culture lense: this is usually a big one. As Peter drucker said: Culture eats strategy for breakfast. What is the team status when it comes to trust and constructive conflict? Do you see artificial harmony sneaking in? -politics: stakeholders mapping and understanding status of each when it comes to performance: who is preventing things from happening for example?

Reviving an underperforming team requires patience, dedication, and a proactive approach. By addressing underlying issues, fostering clear communication, providing support, and setting achievable goals, a struggling team can transform into a motivated, high-performing unit.Remember, every team is unique, so it's crucial to tailor these strategies to fit the specific dynamics and challenges faced by your team.

I really believe that the foundation for a functional team is trust… building trust is easier said than done as it takes time and significant investment and is harder in a virtual team environment… A good tool that i used in the past-inspired by Patric Lanceoni’s book the 5 dysfunctions of a team- is vulnerability based trust, being vulnerable as a leader can go long way into fostering a culture of humility and transparency…the team leader has to start model this first to set the tone for the team to follow…. While this can be uncomfortable at first it can be incredibly rewarding.

I use the word THANK you a lot, as you might notice, I even put it in capital letters BUT thank you has turned into such an automatic word for several people. Try to embrace thankfulness in your daily life, and try to live it as a personal value. Then rewarding and recognizing comes automatically. If you are paying attention to the real contribution of your team, the thank you could be more concrete, and more specific, using the words and even the signals of your team. Don't do a general thank you, to your team. If your direct team is so big that you do not know what is everyone doing and appreciate it, then probably is time to do some restructuring so that you can pay full attention to your team member's contributions.

Try to find out the one being different than most of the others. Good performing teams consist of people with different skills and competence but with same vision and "culture" of work. E.g if most of team members are happy to do extra hour but one is not the one needs to be transferred or exchanged with other departments or trained in making the extra mile - promote the team culture actively and with all possible tools available
