What are effective strategies for promoting DEI in critical reading?

Ao promover o DEI na leitura crítica, estamos ajudando as pessoas a desenvolverem essa habilidade de forma mais inclusiva. Teach students to analyze texts critically, questioning biases, stereotypes, and assumptions. Encourage them to evaluate the societal context and implications of what they read. Empathy taking can deepen the understanding as well.

The term DEIJ emphasizes the interconnectedness of these concepts and the importance of addressing them collectively to create positive social change.

I will emphasize the last part. In a bid to promote inclusivity while selecting materials, ensure you do your due diligence on the text. Do not assume what the author does not portray. At the end it will be stereotypical and so counterproductive.

In my approach to promoting DEIJ in critical reading, I prioritize selecting texts that embrace a rich spectrum of voices, cultures, backgrounds, and viewpoints. Whether it's literature from underrepresented authors, narratives that highlight diverse experiences, or texts exploring global perspectives, the goal is to broaden horizons and cultivate a deeper understanding of the world. By incorporating these diverse texts, both myself and my learners have the opportunity to develop empathy, strengthen critical thinking skills, and foster a more inclusive and enriching learning environment.

In promoting DEI, do not put forward your preconceived opinions on the students. Be ready to encourage diverse opinions. In Nigeria, where we have different tribes, it is possible one have a class full of students from different tribes, so if we are discussing Marriage vocabularies for instance. The context of this tribes will determine the words they will provide. For instance, the idea of early marriage in the North which does not really exist in the West. So a teacher must be open to different views.

Practicing means a commitment to ongoing learning, consistently seeking to enhance my DEI/DEIJ competencies and awareness. This proactive engagement empowers me to create an educational environment where DEI values are not just preached but lived, fostering a culture of continuous growth and understanding among both myself and my learners.
