For me there are 3 must's. Build robust supplier relationships. Establish strong partnerships with reliable suppliers. Develop agile product processes. Have a mature, flexible, reactive and responsive manufacturing. Align contigency and risk management plans. JIT is a highly risk strategy that can stop all the process (internal and external).

In this environment, we have 3 basic pillars to be successful: Technology, processes and people. Technology that meets the demands of your business, processes focused on productivity, clear communication, defined SLAs and service level agreements guided by the final result, with the right people to lead, is the first step to getting there.
