What are effective strategies for advising students with dual degrees or double majors?

First, the student must ask themselves how will they benefit from a duel degree? If there is no concrete reason then the student may want to rethink their decision. Students will better serve themselves by putting their efforts in mastering one field first then move to the next. For example if you tried to was two cars at once one will be cleaner than the other. This is because your focus will be drawn more to one than another. This could cause you to do a poor job on both. If you focus on detailing one car, you will pay more to detail and have a more polished outcome. Remember slow and steady wins the race.

I currently hold both a bachelors degree and masters degree in computer science. Both of which were were stated in 2013 and completed back to back.That was because of the love of computers and recommendations from friends saying i was a computer expert. Now I am working on a Doctors of Education degree in Adult Education. All 3 degrees were from different schools. I am also a licensed flight instructor and commercial pilot. I also have enough education for a bachelors, masters, and doctorate in police work along with numerous certifications. I just have not worked on those degrees and not sure that I will.

To?facilitate students' seamless transition into a double major, make sure colleges allow students to credit general education and major-specific coursework toward more than one major. Students should thoroughly contemplate what they want to accomplish through this effort. They should consider whether continuing their commitment beyond the term or semester is worthwhile, considering the potential for a return.

As someone that comes from the Information Technology field, I think a diverse skillset is very important. I teach in a Business College and view this from that perspective. What is the ROI? Will the second Degree give them a competitive edge? Does it have the potential for higher earnings? Can they make up the time and economic investment required to do a second degree? Finally, see what classes overlap, to reduce the overall load and see if there are classes from one college that may be substituted in the other college to reduce the overall number of separate credits required.

As indicated, monitoring progress is to ensure that they are being successful. Earlier intervention when a student is struggling can enable them to get the help they need and stay on track. However, while dual degrees/double majors can be beneficial to long-term employment goals, it isn't for everyone. Monitoring struggling students may be an indicator that one degree isn't for that student. This is especially true if they are doing well in the other. If struggling with both, this may indicate that they are overwhelmed and that maybe they should consider only one at a time. Further discussions with the student will determine what advice to provide.

An educational leader should advise dual degree students with tailored strategies. Emphasizing creation of a clear academic plan and ensuring alignment between the two majors are essentials to start. Regular check-ins and academic counseling sessions can help students manage their workload effectively. Program managers can encourage interdisciplinary projects to foster synergy between the dual degrees. Networking opportunities and mentorship from faculty in both disciplines enrich their educational experience, ensuring a seamless integration of their academic pursuits.

I had a student that had a pretty poor opinion of higher ed. He was taking a double major. For his career aspirations, it makes a lot of sense. I supported him in this, and knew he was taking a heavier load because of that. In the class he took from me, I was a little more lenient with him, so he could get some assignments in a bit late, but that also meant he could spend more time learning from the assignments. This led him from having a very bad attitude about everything in college to being one of my best students. He was able to land an awesome intern position and springboard my class (outside of his actual major, but part of a business major) into more offers down the road. Help the students to allow them to do their very best work.

Many times I have seen students who are more focused on racking up majors, degrees, concentrations, and awards than they are on getting a good education in an area that matters to them and aligns with their career and life goals. If an advisee of mine wants to add a major or pursue a dual degree, the first thing I do is to talk with them for a while about the “why.” What do they want to do long term? And how will this help them? Some times it makes perfect sense for them, and in those cases I help them understand all the requirements, the right sequencing of courses, and the commitment and time management they need to succeed. If the “why” doesn’t make sense, the discussion usually helps the student come to that awareness on their own.
