However, it is more challenging for managers to help team members who have oscillating goals and who constantly compare themselves with those around. It ends up as a moving target. Unless the team members carry immense respect and trust in the manager, any mentoring conversation will be futile. It is of paramount importance for the managers to assess the extent of credibility they have built with the team. Just because one is a manager by role doesn't mean one will be accepted as a mentor.
