What does a videographer do?

The possibilities are vast. You could be creating brand storytelling videos where you weave the essence of a company into a compelling narrative. I work a lot on internal training and safety videos, which have become a need in employee development. Then, there is event coverage, capturing the highlights of corporate functions and conferences and customer testimonial videos. Each type of corporate videography serves a unique purpose, playing a key role in a company's communication strategy and branding efforts.

Tells a story in moving pictures, by capturing linear moments in time. Those moments can be scripted or staged or random and real. A videographer can imprint his narrative on an event by simply pointing his camera in the direction of that subject and recording those interactions.

Pre-production is very much centered on educational technologies and instructional design. Aimed at medical staff, nurses, support staff and patients.Topics are varied. From protocol demonstrations to patient testimonies.

There is a reason why the industry is filled with so many freelancers, because there are so many different skills and types of equipment to master. You can't master them all! A skill often less addressed is the skill required to help the people on camera. Directing people & making editorial decisions on the go during filming can work wonders for the delivery of the final project. You wouldn't cook a stir fry with bad ingredients, throw it around all you want in a wok, it won't get any better. If their delivery to camera isn't to the standard of the final video, same problem! Knowing the kit and tools it great and essential. But also knowing how to really help and encourage people I think is better.

When I look at the quality (and affordability) of today’s gear and compare to when I was starting out, I get more than a little envious. You can build the skillset needed to be a great videographer with little more than your smartphone, a tripod & a mic. For me it always starts with the basics. Can you shoot sequences? Wide, medium, close, close. Can you gather sound that will enhance the story? Are you composing shots using the rule of thirds? If you can master those, then you can take your shooting to the next level.

Modern Videographers are required to be multi-skilled so they are able to efficiently plan, film and edit video content to a high standard. They should be able to operate a camera, use a gimbal, edit footage, at least have basic lighting skills and motion graphics capabilities. Videographers however, are not a walking video production company. Their role is to create video from something that already exists in front of them (e.g an event) and using their technical ability to make it interesting. A videographer usually does not however, execute a vision from scratch (e.g a tv commercial). That is the role of a cinematographer - which should not be confused with what a videographer does.

You need to posses a wide range of tools and skill set. I believe your perfection doesn't just depend on the app you use for editing but also on the creativity of videographers!

It's a typical 'many hats' role that videographers have to cover. They possess the ability to setup a 'set', direct a shoot, and then create a film from the footage captured. To do this they understand how to operate a camera, and create visually simple but technically complex lighting setups. Biggest tip I have is to create what you would want to see. Whether that's a training film where you pace it according to what you imagine an employee would appreciate and engage with, or a documentary that has an important story to get across to the audience in a though provoking way.

I've picked up a few cool tips over the years ??. First, I plan like crazy. Script, storyboard, you name it. Helps me keep track of what I'm after. Then, it's all about experimenting – playing with settings, styles, you know, finding the vibe. I always get feedback, keeps me grounded. Gotta be ready for anything, though, like last-minute changes. I keep it simple, focusing on what's key, making sure everything's clear. And honestly, I just have fun with it. Videography's this awesome way to show my style and share stories.

In the first stage, after the scenario is prepared, you (as a videographer) must prepare a shot list, or in other words, a decoupage of all plans must be prepared. In the next step, you should list the required equipment according to the project budget. In the next step, choose your assistants according to the scale of the project and the required equipment. And finally, before starting the videography, check all the things with the employer (and the director) and get their approval.

I just want to add that, being good at the technical side and being creative are very important in videography. But to really do well, you also need to be good at promoting yourself, understanding how to sell your services, and being able to change with the times. By mixing your video skills with smart business thinking, you can stand out and do well in this field where there's a lot of competition.
