Additionally, they should be proficient in modeling and documenting processes, capabilities, value streams, and outcomes. They should also possess experience in designing and implementing IT solutions that support the business architecture such as service-oriented architecture, cloud computing, or microservices. Furthermore, they should be familiar with various domains and standards including finance, marketing, operations, security, or compliance.
In terms of business and interpersonal skills, a principal architect must understand and translate the business strategy into actionable solutions. They must also lead and manage complex projects with cross-functional teams and stakeholders. Moreover, they must be able to communicate clearly and persuasively with different audiences, levels, and formats. Additionally, they must be able to innovate and adapt to changing business environments as well as coach and mentor other architects and analysts.
Typically a principal architect has a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, engineering, business or a related field along with several years of experience in business architecture, enterprise architecture or IT management. Some may also have professional certifications such as Certified Business Architect (CBA), TOGAF Certified or Certified Enterprise Architect (CEA).
