As a Photojournalist, my job is to capture the story as authentically as possible without embellishing or biasing the narrative.

Breaking this down into two parts, photo and journalism. A photo is simply an image made on a camera. It could be a phone or a professional camera like a DSLR. On the other hand, journalism is an activity that involves reporting news usually for the press. With this understanding, photojournalism in my perspective is how one can use images as a medium to inform, educate and transform society through various publications such as newspapers or magazines. What makes one a photojournalist is how he employs ethical and professional standards when photographing happenings.
To me, photojournalism is the profession of telling or capturing a story with captivating imagery. It could be through a unique perspective, by capturing emotion, or by simply complementing the written word with contextual details. When done well, the audience remains engaged and invested in the story.
Photojournalists need a combination of technical, artistic, and journalistic skills. They have to master the basics of photography, such as exposure, composition, lighting, and editing. They also have to develop their own style and vision, and be able to create compelling and meaningful images that tell a story. Moreover, they have to be proficient in research, writing, and interviewing, and be able to produce captions, headlines, and articles that accompany their photos. Photojournalists also need to be curious, adaptable, and resourceful, and be able to work under pressure, deadlines, and sometimes dangerous situations.
Journalism skills are a necessity. Just because someone is a photographer doesn’t mean that they’re a photojournalist. The best photojournalists have sharp news skills - interviewing, understanding contextual visuals, know how to source and find stories, the list goes on. I teach both photography and journalism students in photojournalism and the journalists seem to catch on quicker all the time. Technical skill with a camera is obvious. Photojournalists understand that light isn’t only necessary but the light (or even lack of it) tells the story. You have to find the photo in the chaos and madness without controlling it.

In my experience, the key to becoming a photojournalist is to not be afraid to share your work with others, and be open to helping others, even it if it involves not being paid monetarily.
Doing a course is not the best way, because its a field job and nothing can prepare you for what you experience on the ground. The best way to learn from the experts whose work has been published, study their images with the context and how images help in storytelling. Like what's the story, how is the framing, what colours are being used, what is the angle, what's the focal length and try to emulate them and then evolve. If you want to cover conflicts like me then check the images of al jazeera their images are really impactful can't say the same for their ethics. and if ever got a chance to shoot something of news value go for it no matter if you get paid or not.
