What does a lecturer do?

Lecturer is a brick and mortar term, today we academicians are progressing towards igniting passion towards learning and facilitating students to bloom. In the fast paced AI realm , a hard core lecturer who only lectures has no place , a thought provoking resourceful,creative and empathetic facilitator is vital source to build young and charismatic student fraternity ??

People don't realise that teaching and assessment are highly mentally laborious tasks. A class is an eclectic mix where each student has different learning needs. To the outsider, a lecture might be just one task but for a lecturer they have to assess verbal & non-verbal reactions in real time to understand how they have to proceed with their session. Assessment of class work, projects, assignments and exam papers also is done on a one-on-one basis as everyone's performance is individualistically unique. This is especially a cumbersome task in the case of faculty of studies like humanities, creative subjects like mass media, architecture, fashion, etc.

I'm a bit traditional, but I personally believe that a lecturer models thinking and thought processes of a subject and sketches broad, overarching outlines of topics for students. A lecturer is not just there to deliver content and definitely not there to replace textbooks. Beyond modelling thinking, I have tried (and still try) to inspire my students or audience to engage with materials and spark curiosity and inquisitiveness in them. I demonstrate my passion and interest. And I try to make the students think critically about the topic.

An important question to ask is to what extent is a lecturer's research linked to teaching. More often than not, the lecturer would have to teach some basic courses which may only have some broad relation to the lecturer's research. This changes for higher level courses, which are typically shaped by the lecturer, and will see the introduction of course material that is directly relevant to the lecturer's research.

In research and publication, a lecturer's message should be: "Publish or perish, but don't forget the purpose." The paper should be a meaningful contribution that stirs the pot of knowledge. And collaboration often turns good research into great discoveries.

No hay que obsesionarse con estos aspectos que se han convertido en un trámite más. Publicar por publicar no tiene sentido y mucho menos cuando es para lograr una subida en el escalafón o un reconocimiento en tu profesión. Por desgracia hoy se publica más por justificarse que por investigar.

Teaching subject content is one thing, but taking learners, students and people in the organization along on the path of personal development is another important aspect of teaching in my view. Teaching should prepare students for (professional) life and for this it is essential to address other areas of development through mentoring. Teamwork, an understanding of leadership and the interrelationships in organizations can be taught and exemplified on the job during their studies. If we want to prepare students for their future working environments, we need to integrate a holistic view in education. The exchange of experience through mentoring and the development of personal reflection through supervision are immensely valuable for this.

Teaching has a lot of administrative components, such as course organisation, creation of course documents and instructions, communicating with students etc. Some aspects can potentially passed over to a teaching assistant, but typically, there are many aspects which have to be settled by the lecturer. The lecturer may also be assigned other roles in the department which are administrative in nature, such as a member of a departmental committee or being assigned to organise events for the department. One has to be aware that such administrative load exists for this job.

In handling administration and management tasks, a lecturer should adopt the approach: "Plan well, but be ready to adapt." Communication is king; clear and concise interaction can turn potential chaos into efficiency.

Admin work can be tough but that is part of any job. For me as a teacher, i enjoy creating schedules of activities and schemes of work based on how my students learn best and the curricula. The benefits of admin work is to review and refine previous activities to improve the impacts of T&L. Admin work is also essential to establish communication channels with students to engage them in their learning. Admin work can create venues for staff to cooperate and work which can be essential for sharing good practice.

Actually I agree that it needs alot of study and planning to deliver a lecture you have to be well prepared but what I disagree is not all lecturers do this kind of planning and research work. What I have observed most of the traditional lectures think them as the experts of the subject and they rely on their current knowledge and very few of them get involved in the learning process. It is an ideal situation that a lecturer keeps on doing research, trainings in order to keep himself updated about the new trends and pedagogies as the world is transforming so fast and a lot of new information is available as a single day passes on

?Qué hace un profesor? Es una excelente pregunta y se requiere mucho espacio para contestar. Pero puedo comentar, las rutinas. Un docente, ense?a, investiga, produce, gestiona cuando es además gerente académico. También se podría pensar el cuál es el nivel de escolaridad que atiende. Contestar esa pregunta varía según el contexto se defina. A la lista habría que agregar, actualizarse, estudiar, asistir a eventos, hacer trabajo social, escribir y tener participación en redes sociales. Particularmente prefiero trabajar con los estudiantes que llegan a la universidad desde el bachillerato. Me gusta construir con ellos, la forma en que desean trabajar conmigo.

Lecturer is a misleading term and implies didactic delivery. A better way of looking at the role is to recognise it as a leadership and facilitation of student learning function. There is a need to consider the safety and well-being of students under their care and ensure there is an element of fun and enjoyment on the path the students have chosen.
