An enologist is a professional specializing in the scientific process of creating wine. Enologists apply scientific knowledge & winemaking knowledge to assist wineries in making new wines & improving the quality of all wine produced at a facility. They have knowledge of horticulture as far as it is concerned with grapevine cultivar development, including wine grapes, table grapes, & ornamentals that survive in cold climates. Enologists test the wine for any contaminants, such as heavy metals, pesticides, or spoilage microorganisms, that could pose health risks or affect the characteristics of the wine. Graduate & Ph.D. programs in enology & viticulture (science of growing grapes) are available at reputed universities across the world.
