A drainage engineer is responsible for a range of tasks related to planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating drainage projects. The engineer must conduct site surveys and assessments to determine the drainage needs and conditions, develop plans and specifications that meet the technical, environmental, and regulatory requirements, prepare cost estimates and budgets for the project, coordinate and supervise the construction and installation of drainage facilities and equipment, monitor and inspect the performance of the system, troubleshoot any drainage issues or problems that arise, provide technical advice to clients and contractors, and conduct research to improve drainage practices and technologies.

To become a drainage engineer, it is necessary to have a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, or a related field. Depending on the state or country, a professional engineer (PE) license or certification may also be required. Drainage engineer have a wide array of duties which include: -Managing design/ implementation of drainage projects. This includes planning, design, construction and maintenance of the drainage systems. -Surveying of drainage conditions in order to determine what improvement measures that’s needed. -Data collection and gathering -Preparation of technical reports and presentations at public events. -Cost estimation for the drainage projects.

These include specialized software and tools, such as HEC-RAS, SWMM, ArcGIS, AutoCAD, and StormCAD, to design, model, simulate, and test drainage systems.
