What do you do if you're unsure about choosing a career path as an administrative assistant?

One thing I found extremely useful in applying for a career in admin was reflecting on my past experiences and the skills I gained from them. I think it’s easy to write yourself off before you’ve even started when applications require a certain amount of experience within the administrative field. However, many employers are looking for applicants who can demonstrate transferable skills which are highly applicable to a career in admin. You can demonstrate the above skills from a number of jobs outside of admin. Therefore, it’s crucial to sit back and assess your previous careers and the skills you gained as a result. More often than not, a diverse and deft skillset will equate to in-industry experience from an employer’s perspective.

I agree with the aforementioned. Additionally, one thing I’ve found helpful was to work as a contractor (temp) for as long as possible before committing to a permanent role. This was especially true if it was in a new industry. This way you can assess if it works for you. Staffing/ temp services used to offer a ton of OTJ training or skills courses to help you be successful in whatever assignment they send you. So that was another perk to going the temp route. It gives you a glimpse of expectations and the skills necessary to be successful in those roles.

I agree in general that crossworking habilities may improve and define a job from a different perspective. But, if specific technical skills are mandatory, like accounting or legal framework or engineering, depending on timing or available time to cover a position, the organization may opt to train internal people in feasible aspects and concepts for a task or job, as part of an internal career development program. In case the urgency is mandatory, those habilities have to be already incoporated from start in a new person outside the company.

One simple chance to learn can be assuming someone else responsabilities in the administration dept., is to be the back up during licenses (vacation, illness, family grow of a mate, etc.). The persona in charge of the area, manager or boss, will certainly lay on you if you already had the chance to show your abbility in your specific function (to say being deppendable), and so to be the visible face of the whole sector if the boss is out for travel or other reason, or assuming more than one function for certain time. Taking a time for self-reflection always pays back well. In any case, the idea is not only to "understand" how the admin. work is done, but to be able to put hands on day after day and face the daily problems the area has to face and solve with a practical approach beyond simple curiosity or theory. So, if a stretch move comes to your career, you can be sure that you "lived" the experience as an actor, not a spectator.
