What do you do if you're torn between pursuing a master's degree or gaining work experience in education?

When torn between doing a masters degree and gaining work experience, you should always fall back on your career goals for guidance. If doing masters brings you closer to your long term goals than go for the masters. However, work experience is also a great learning opportunity. Hence, maybe, explore the possibility of doing a masters while working. Several universities have part time masters programs or classes are scheduled so as to accommodate the time constraints of students who are working full time. However, if doing masters is a passion project, maybe take it up once you are more settled in your work schedule. After all learning is a life long pursuit.

I can see both sides of this issue. I graduated with a BS Degree in Dental Hygiene. Then, I wanted to attend grad school for a Master’s Degree in Dental Hygiene. I went straight to grad school and graduated in 1974. I had people criticize me because I did not have private practice experience-but that was an advantage. I was fresh and open to new ideas. Fifty-plus years later, I would not change a thing. This is a highly personal decision. Some of my instructors in undergraduate school tried to tell me not to go to grad school-they had nothing to base it on and a couple of them were jealous. When I was in grad school, there were only 3 programs in the US. I selected the Univ. of Missouri’s Dental School -a great decision!

These days one can choose both, by teaching while pursuing post-graduate studies part-time. This offers the advantage of reflecting on your teaching practice while studying, and implementing the theory you have learned.

One must look at how value is attributed to a master's degree. If one is looking to attain a master's degree strictly as a means for a pay raise, then it is worth looking into how your district values having that degree. Is the pay increase nominal, or is it significant enough to pay back what was spent on tuition in the long run? While some districts offer thousands more annually for the step increase, others offer a few hundred.

Do both - find a decent Executive MBA program. Most EMBA expect you to have real work work experience. The process can be expensive. You will lose sleep, friends, your spouse will wonder who that stranger is that pops into the kitchen for coffee every few days - but in the end it can be worth it. I did a 2 year EMBA program at the University of Toronto and it opened a ton of doors that would have been shut to me had I not taken the program. Make sure you have a good support system in place and talk to your spouse about it in advance as it will be disruptive for both you and your family. The idea that education is costly (too costly in some cases) I believe is largely nonsense. The value of education both in terms of personal development but also critical thinking is vital to anyone who desires to be successful in many modern careers. I'm a nurse by background and have masters qualifications completely outside of Nursing but which contribute massively to my understanding and allow me to think critically and develop responses to challenging circumstances that I wouldn't think of if I hadn't don't the study. The idea of hickey mouse degrees is large a right wing lie... all degrees teach critical thinking and allow us to problem solve more effectively. As such I would encourage anyone remotely capable to study!

Are you ok with picking up classes over time or do you know yourself as someone who would need to push through and get it done all at once and now? Are there job opportunities near a school where you can continue your education? Can you handle online courses or courses in your summers to continue your professional development? These are factors that really need to be weighed against your financial situation, proximity and ability to partake in different educational paths, and knowing yourself as a learner. If you are working in education, you will be able to find programs that are geared towards people who work full-time. It is a very big decision as deciding to go for your Masters Degree not only is it cost intensive and also can take alot of your time, but it is worth it on the long run. First of all it depends on your goals, and the stage of your life you are currently in, if you are not yet married and you just left school I would advice that you can go for your Masters (especially if you are changing careers) and also work along side, which is what I am currently doing. But the first things first is knowing exactly what your goals are and if this decision will really help you achieve your goal. Also most Masters Degree expect you to go for work experience as part of the curriculum (usually optional). I hope this helps!

Practical experience in the classroom is essential to beginning the reflection process and journey of a teacher/educator. After several years of work experience and professional development, a Master Degree is all the more rewarding, as learners are able to apply their real world expertise and perspective to their graduate studies. I would not have benefited as much as I did from graduate school, had I decided to go right after completing my B.A. Additionally, having been a working teacher made me a much better learner!

If you can get a job, I think working for a while is great. Your job might then pay for the MA, and you’ll be better positioned to learn the maximum amount from it after some time in the classroom, and, if you’re still in your early 20s, from general maturity I come to this perspective both from having spent three years working between my BA and MA, and much later teaching (linguistics, in an English department) to many MA students who were teachers. Having experience in the classroom allowed students to engage with the course materials much more deeply and with more understanding of how they could use them in their own classroom.
