What do you do if you're struggling to land an internship in the film production industry?

If struggling to land a film production internship, expand your search beyond listings to smaller companies and networking events. Tailor your application materials to highlight relevant skills and passion. Build a strong portfolio showcasing your work. Network extensively through online platforms, alumni, and local meetups. Gain experience through freelancing or related internships like video editing. Above all, persist positively - the competitive industry requires dedication in pursuing opportunities that align with your filmmaking goals.

This is a tough one especially if you are struggling to get a foot in the door. Beyond just attending events, you have to try and engage in meaningful conversations that can showcase your passion and knowledge. I’ve found that discussing specific industry trends or sharing insights from recent projects can often times leave a lasting impression.

Expand your network by attending film festivals, workshops, and industry meetups if internships feel out of reach. Engage with professionals for insights and potential opportunities. Genuine relationships, not just contacts, are valued in the film industry. A casual conversation today could lead to a job offer tomorrow.

Instead of just practicing general skills, focus on areas that align with your desired role. For example, if you’re interested in editing, create a standout editing reel that highlights your style, a new technical abilities, or a new trend that is popping up.

In addition to sharing work online, consider collaborating with other emerging filmmakers. Networking within your peer group can lead to joint projects that garner attention and showcase your collaborative skills.

This is crucial!! Look for opportunities that align with your career goals. For instance, if you’re interested in cinematography, volunteer to assist at a camera rental company to gain practical experience with all the camera models and also probably create connections with industry professionals. This is something a colleague of mine did many years ago and she rocketed from that point on after meeting a director at the rental company.

Volunteering on film sets or for organizations offers hands-on experience and networking. It demonstrates your commitment to learning and contributing, fostering connections that may lead to future opportunities. Despite lack of immediate compensation, it's an investment yielding valuable experience and industry contacts.

Explore mentorship opportunities outside of formal internships. I still have mentorships even after decades in the industry. Building a mentorship relationship with an experienced professional will offer you some valuable guidance and probable open doors to opportunities you might not have considered.

Go to work as a background actor. It is literally THE easiest way to get onto a film set, and once you're on set, you're on your way. I'm not saying that you should bother the crew and be under foot, but it's a great way to demonstrate your work ethic, it's a great way to learn and understand film set dynamics, and you never know who's watching you work and who will soon be producing their own film and want you on it.
