What do you do if you're struggling to develop essential skills during a Machine Learning internship?

Utilize online forums for additional support. 5. Attend local meetups to connect with peers. 6. Gain insights and resources you might have missed. 7. Embrace the collaborative nature of the ML field. 8. Learn from others' experiences and solutions. 9. Remember, all experts started as beginners. 10. Most industry professionals are willing to help newcomers.

Don't hesitate to communicate openly with your mentor or supervisor about your struggles. They are there to support you and provide guidance. Ask for clarification on tasks, seek feedback on your work, and discuss any areas where you feel you need additional support or resources.

ML has a very robust and expansive community. Even during internships if internally you are not receiving any help from your team members, you can always reach out to the vibrant community at large, they are eager to help and give really salient advice. You have luminaries like Yann LeCun, Andrej Karpathy, etc. who are active on X (Twitter) and actively interact with a wide range of people. Ideally it is always better to receive help internally, but that might not always be available as per your need, so feel free to reach to people in other places.

A strong foundation is really important as they form the bedrock on which all else is built. You can get lost in the code implementation for hours upon hours debugging small technical errors caused by the quirks of code, but if you do not know what the code is doing it is exponentially more difficult if you do not know how the algorithm is implemented.

1. Revisit foundational ML topics for clarity. 2. Strengthen understanding of linear algebra and probability. 3. Solidify programming skills, especially in Python. 4. Utilize Python's extensive libraries for ML, like scikit-learn. 5. Refresh knowledge on core subjects to tackle advanced concepts. 6. Enhance problem-solving skills in ML through basics. 7. Identify gaps in understanding and address them. 8. Review programming fundamentals relevant to ML. 9. Explore online resources and tutorials for revision. 10. Apply basic concepts to simplify complex ML challenges.

Machine learning is a practical field where hands-on experience is crucial for proficiency. Allocate time daily for coding exercises, implementing machine learning algorithms, and exploring real-world datasets. Constructing a portfolio of projects will not only showcase your abilities to prospective employers but also strengthen your learning and problem-solving skills.

For me at least, coding and implementing algorithms feels like a muscle that I lose if I do not keep practicing on a daily basis. If I am away from these practice for more than a week or so, I completely forget a lot of the details that become really important during implementation. Pronounced and daily practice is therefore really important to maintain as a habit.

There is a hierarchy of the type of activities that help in retention. Passive learning habits like reading and listening to lectures are towards the lower ends of the hierarchy, on the other hand activities like teaching, practicing and actually doing helps in increased retention and better learning over the long term.

Motivation is harder to sustain than routine habits. Therefore it is better to arrange your schedule in a sustainable manner and accordingly divide learning goals into manageable chunks spread out over a sustainable time period in order to prevent burn out or exhaustion with the learning material. There also has be enough variety in order to keep it interesting for a longer period of time.
