What do you do if you're a librarian in a digital age and need to adapt to new responsibilities?

I could not have said it better. As a Librarian you need to embrace change. We are advocates of change. We are change agents. This is how librarians embrace our technological age, be an advocate of change as needed. Educate yourself in all lanes of technology. It’s the only way we as librarians will stay relevant.

I always take responsibility. I check what are the skills needed for taking up new responsibilities. I do homework that requires. I also update my skills professionally that are important for taking up new responsibilities. There are open source resources and I see the authenticity and to what extent they help me. Social media with amazing people who are already working in those areas do answer to the queries, and suggest how to navigate. Growth mind set always provides help and ways to navigate.

I agree that we need to expand skills to enable to work in a digital library. We have to accept that we need to improve ourselves same with the library we work with. Its an advantage for our students since they wont carry books anymore but instead they can save information from their mobile phones, laptops or tablets.

The digital age has reshaped our approach to many core services. Whether it's the growing expectation that librarians understand a variety of software and online resources, or the belief that digital archives or expanded access to digital content should occur, libraries today are on a path different than earlier generations. When offering services, libraries and their staff members must balance between providing traditional services and collections that long-time patrons expect with newer approaches for younger generations that are more comfortable with technology and online resources. An important part of redefining services involves informing stakeholders and patrons of your plans, seeking their input, and responding to their concerns.

There was a time 40 or more years ago when patrons traveled to the library in rain or snow to get access to materials. With the online portals and databases now available through libraries and other providers, many patrons do much of their research away from the physicial building where the library is located. Sometimes, these patrons fail to understand that the resources the libraries offer online cost the library money. There is no "database fairy" or "e-book fairy" that gives these resources to the library for free. Libraries must inform the community of the resources they offer and encourage community members to see the value we provide. While some types of advocacy may be limted for public employees, we must get the word out!
