What do you do if you're a laid-off Data Science professional seeking resources?

In my view..!! If you have the skills and have solved problems..!! Getting laid off is an opportunity for a new role in the same profile of a different company.. Companies are looking for skilled engineers and there will always be hiring for good engineers.. Just up your game and always be keen to learn..

If that is the situation then i will keep it cool because panicking does not help. I will re-assess my skills w.r.t the technology out their in market. If i am not upto the mark then i learn that technology. Networking will be great and Getting a mentor in the field is always helpful. Data Science area in niche and in high demand so there will not be scarcity of opportunities.

Keeping it simple & clear : 1. Upgrade yourself, practice questions from InterviewQuery - just login questions are free, explanations are paid, but you can just use free GPT 2. Write a no bull-shit resume and make sure your linkedin reflects the same 3. Go with the flow, its all of GenAI and LLMs now. So build something using LangChain, LangGraph etc. Leave all the blogs, their official documentation provides good examples. 4. Keep applying and attend interviews and note down all the questions that you were unable to answer, and learn them. 5. Never stop attending interviews just so that you lack confidence in yourself.

I didn't have a prior industry experience in data science but I can provide some of my views. Being laid off is a challenge, but for data science professional, it's also an opportunity to take stock and ensure you're aligned with the ever-evolving field. In my experience, you have to keep on assessing your skills periodically e.g. once in a month. Whether you are laid off or not, this should be your focus all the time. Check which part of modeling lifecycle you need more depth, is that data engineering? or model inference or Generative AI. Always consider the full lifecycle while assessing your skills.

But it all comes down to statistics and continuous improving on your past mistakes. Regarding opportunities, don't overlook freelancing and colabs, as they can open other opportunities that would otherwise be closed if you didn't pivot. Don't give up, and get out there, be the one to talk to people, be proactive. Eventually you'll succeed! ???

I believe in the paradigm of giving rather than receiving. While it would be helpful if you're living in a tech hub like London or the Valley, after having attended a few events, I think if you have the mindset of giving/contributing to the event, you tend to cultivate "relationships" than just "networks" (proactive VS reactive). You have to remind yourself, that other people attending these events share your passion, so don't be apprehensive about talking to them. You could perhaps end up talking to a product manager who is on the lookout to hire a new data scientist in GenAI. You have nothing to lose. At the very least, you end up exchanging pleasantries which signals you might be a pleasant person to work with.

Honestly in my opinion, a Data Scientist / a Machine Learning practioner is one who would always be on one's toes. They would be actively updating themselves by upskilling themselves and building their network (both across the industry and academia). For such people, the chance of "loosing" their job is very less, since these people would always be in demand in the current scenario. However, due to an unforeseen circumstance, if they happen to loose their job, they still should continue what they were always doing earlier (upskilling & network building) and a nudge in their network would get them a new job. Data scientists should however be open to good holistic opportunities and not just look at the monetary benefits from the job role.

Collaborate with other engineers, researchers and scientist for projects usable for local communities, create a start-up or business. Share learnings through hands-on tutorial, short courses, and guide younger researchers by providing feedback.
