Mostly, problem solving is an art that some have and others do not. For those FM interns who are seeking to improve their problem solving skills through experience, I must say that the easiest approach is to think of their supervisor as a role model for this skill and try to closely watch how he/she handles a problem and learn the methods and strategies from him/her. This is the most effective and practical way to learn problem solving skills.

Despite what disgruntled customers may think, most FM decisions are not life or death. As someone who is learning it is ok that you don't have to have all the answers right now. You have to remain curious as the landscape constantly changes with technology and the local environment (legal, political etc.) Learn wide! There is much to be gained by understanding planning laws, project management, strategic decision making, engineering, construction, HVAC.
