What do you do if you're faced with a challenging safety situation in the Oil and Gas sector?

In the oil and gas sector, safety is of paramount importance due to the high-risk nature of the industry. When faced with a challenging safety situation quickly assess the nature and severity of the safety issue, activate the company's emergency response plan, establish clear communication channels, initiate evacuation, take immediate steps to contain the situation and mitigate further risks, after the situation is under control conduct a thorough investigation to determine the root cause of the safety issue, continuously review and improve safety practices, regularly conduct drills and emergency response trainings, document the entire incident, provide support and counseling for personnel who may have been affected.

O&G has verious processes and has two groups of personnel Operating and Non-Operating. If non-operating just make sure to evacuate as your knowledge of the process may not be sufficient to adequately evaluate hazards, risks and activate available safeguards that are manually operated. Those are automated may malfunction as well and may require manual activation. If Operating Team you activate ERP and contact to ER Team, give location what is the emergency and follow instructions. That will avoid loss of time and ERT will have more time to respond to ... IDLH evacuate, leave it to ERT. But, provide all information to ERT. Nowadays high hazard activities are better safeguarded. High consequence but low risk of occurence is underestimated.

First of all is to stop the job, access the possible cause of the safety issue. Address the situation, find out possible and safe way of going about it. Get information from experts. Recheck your procedures. If you’re not trained, get trained individuals on the task. Then you must finally analyze to know if it is safe to continue the job. If it is not safe. Then stop the job finally and seek further action from experts.

Start with assessing the risk which is the initial task to know the likelihood and potential consequences and will guide you in establishing the required control measures ( left side of the bow tie) and mitigate consequences( Right side of the bow tie).

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are not designed for crisis management; they guide everyday operations. In contrast, Emergency Response Plans, crafted from international best practices, previous incidents, and key lessons learned, are crucial for navigating crises. These plans offer specific directions for immediate action during emergencies. Once the situation is resolved, as declared by the Site Safety Leader or Incident Commander, SOPs resume their role in guiding standard operations, marking the transition back to normalcy and the deactivation of the emergency response.

Safety Management is not addressed using adhoc methods. Do not wait to be presented with challenges before considering what to do. Conduct hazard analysis to see hazards within common, expert and industry knowledge and develop Standards of Operation that properly addresses each hazards including emergency situations. Conduct risk assessments, inspections and audits to continually check and confirm that any new gaps are closed. Ofcourse you cannot get these done if management only pays lip service to Safety Management. If after all these, you still experience a "Safety Challenge", go back to consult the emergency management system to address the challenge. This also means that you will have to update your OHSMS to address this challenge.

Assign team mates to help and communicate different departments to minimise time prior to Job , these and golden time where team can effectively minimise harm

Having a communications plan in place is paramount to ensure an effective safety response operation. The plan should outline any operational limitations, requirements for permits, or restricted frequencies or devices, as well as the level of equipment and technology, and the need for subject matter experts required to operate and troubleshoot the communication network. Besides, operations in remote areas may require additional satellite and radio capability, or there may be military or national security restrictions on the type of communication devices, frequencies and channels that may be used. Finally, contact information for IT assistance, GIS operators and other technology specialists should also be included in the plan.

Effective communication of the potential risks lies in been understood . At this stage it is imperative that everyone involved understand the safety implications of his/her actions and inactions and takes responsibility of the safety and well-being of both themselves and others

Once again, communications shall be practiced during various levels of Drills. 3 way communication by verification of provided information and synchronization of all participants of the emergency situation communication is essential in saving lives, health, nature and assets. Communication is one of the standardized requirement of various Safety Standards, NEBOSH, ISO. SOLAS, Etc.

Yes agreed above in addition we should have a communication plan too . Team mates should be assigned so that communication with different departments at at same time simultaneously can happen to minimise action response team time and force to act and respond.

Ou seja, retirar de forma ordenada todas as pessoas que n?o est?o treinadas para determinadas situa??es e isolar a área para que a equipe de brigada é técnicos possam atuar com calma e seguran?a. Ter já um plano definido com UM LíDER e técnicos é um grande passo pois evita de todos ficarem como baratas tontas diante da situa??o. Independente da área onde acontece a emergência, a coordena??o tem que ser centralizada em uma pessoa somente. Dispor e fazer verifica??o periódica em todos os kits de emergência para garantir que estejam sempre a postos se necessário.

Una vez se han evaluado los posibles riesgos, es importante la comunicación efectiva para redireccionar una situación peligrosa a las personas que se encuentran aptas y que son las principales responsables en estas situaciones, pues no necesariamente todos estaremos en la capacidad de actuar de manera emergente en las decisiones de paradas/cierres operacionales.

In fact that's a test of the "rightness" of a decision in an emergency: the more inconveniencing it is to take that step, the more likely it is the safest, time-efficient and most beneficial to all concerned in the long term
