Learn new technologies/new databases through real life experience. My approach would be to try to use some new(and stable, this is actually important) database in a new project which has relatively small impact. A few years ago I started using Cassandra for the first time. I was coming traditional SQL background. That did give me the opportunity to see all pros and cons of distributed DBs. But it is important that usage of new tech is limited in a way that it could be replaced reasonably fast if needed, like I said above low impact. This will give you psychological safety to try something new.
