What do you do if you're a data scientist looking to transition into teaching in your late career?

The question I would ask is, how does my background as a data scientist connect to the area of education/with the needs and challenges in education today? In addition to acquiring the necessary teaching qualifications, and teaching is a skill, I would ask this question: how do I engage with issues that are current in education today? I would also ask, who are my students and how does my background/knowledge and expertise contribute to their educational goals? How can I be a mentor (post-secondary) or encourage new graduates into the field of data scientist? Who are represented or underrepresented in the field and how would I begin to speak to those areas of underrepresentation? It all depends on your philosophy for going into education.

Your experience is valuable. Find a university that offers a 1 year program. For instance, SVSU has an ACE program for people that have a bachelor’s degree and want to get their teaching certification. They will push you through in one year. Also, with the demand for teachers today, many districts are paying people like you to teach while you attend school- promising to hire contingent upon you agreeing to work there X amount of years when you’re done.

I always find teaching data science and coding very rewarding. You get to see students learn the knowledge and apply it in their own creative ways. One way to get into teaching is to volunteer to host workshops or be guest speakers at bootcamps, conferences, or hackathons. Once you gain this experience, you could look into actual part-time or full-time teaching opportunities through community colleges and universities. Universities typically are happy to get industry experts to be lecturers!

I would consider getting a substitute, teachers, license, and substitute teach for a few months. Then decide whether or not I like teaching. Teaching is not for everyone.
