Recognise the growing importance of cloud-based databases and invest time in acquiring relevant skills and knowledge in this area.

As a data engineer keen on Azure, I identified gaps in my skills for a specialized path. I embarked on mastering Python and SQL, foundational languages in data engineering, to manipulate data efficiently. Recognizing Azure's pivotal role. I delved into Azure Data Services, focusing on Azure Synapse Analytics for big data and analytics, ADF for data integration, and Azure Databricks for collaborative data science. Azure Data Lake Gen 2 became my go-to for large-scale data storage. To refine my approach to data architecture, I explored Data Medallion Architecture in Azure Databricks, enhancing my ability to manage complex data ecosystems. The biggest mistake we usually make is picking something we know a lot better than the other things as our niche, especially when we are just a few years into our careers. This leads to 2 problems - resentment at a later stage that we did not know this also existed and we should have tried out this as well earlier prior to choosing a niche, secondly since we have not developed breadth of skills , we might believe that we are good in a particular thing but we might not know or realize how other pieces fit in. Thus, before choosing a niche, explore more. Understand how different pieces fit together, what appeals you the most and then assess your skill gaps, find role models in the niche of your choice , look for courses, webinars and mentors.

Seek out mentors or professionals experienced in your desired specialized career paths, whether it's data science, machine learning engineering, or data architecture. Engage with them through networking platforms, industry events, or online communities to gain insights into the specific skills, experiences, and challenges associated with those paths.
