What do you do if you're a copywriter facing a layoff and need guidance for your next career move?

Lay-off is one of the most common issues we are dealing with currently. However, getting panicked or stressed out due to a lay–off is natural. However, do remember that it is the best time to enhance or brush up our skills besides searching for a new job. In this situation, I will follow the industry leaders on LinkedIn to know the industry trends, will start learning from them, do my necessary upskilling & obviously, will reach out to any industry leader for more assistance.

I'm going to quote Obi Wan Kenobi here: "Use the force, think". Be mindful of the living force too. Don't go Darth when hard is your path. Go full Skywalker, and you'll get your next job so fast like that whiskey, Johnny Walker.

One way to approach any layoff is to consider looking for work rather than a job. If you can access the ACA marketplace for insurance you may find better earning opportunities in the gig world. Follow job postings to see what companies are looking for. If you have only part of what they need you could offer to take a temp role to fill the gap while they are hiring.

First of all, I just take a deep breath and focus on my strengths. And remind myself that I'm skilled a skilled writer. Then I explore the options available. Whether it’s considering freelance gigs or remote work to keep the writing flowing. Maybe if there's a niche in copywriting that excites me, I dive into some research. I also try to network with other writers or marketing folks , you never know what hidden opportunities might be out there.

Facing a layoff as a copywriter, prioritize updating your resume to spotlight your latest achievements and the tangible results you’ve delivered. Use dynamic action verbs to detail your proactive tackling of challenges. Tailor each resume to match the job descriptions you're applying for, ensuring it resonates with potential employers' needs. A finely tuned resume not only showcases your skills but also sets the stage for new career opportunities.

Update you resume and include all your most recent achievements as they relate to your copywriting career. Tailor you resume to suit each job application and ensure it's crafted in a way that places you strategically as the ideal candidate for the job. While you might be able to settle it out with your current employer, sometimes, it's inevitable that you're getting laid off. Therefore, be strategic in your positioning and make landing a new gig an easier reality for yourself.

Effective networking involves exchanging knowledge and advice, which can naturally progress into career opportunities.

Talk to people who have been through the same situation, understand that it's not the end of the world, and yes, you can start over. Often, networking is enough for a new placement or at least a guide on where to go next. This is one of the great importance of having good professional relationships, after all. Another important step is to understand the stage of life you're in. What makes sense for you right now?

Je rebondis quasi immédiatement. D'abord, je me pose pour digérer et tirer le positif de ce licenciement. Je fais le point sur mes points forts et appelle mon réseau pour trouver une mission freelance, postuler nécessaires etc. Je me forme si necessaire et discute avec les entrepreneurs autour de moi, dans les salons, les afterworks, en visio, pour définir leur besoin et en faire un business.

There are many ways to make money as a copywriter and freelancing is definitely one of them. Pay for a freelance course, get a mentor and start sending out proposals the right way. Once you get your foot in the door, there is no going back. There are platforms like Upwork, freelancer and so many other platforms where you can start. Also, build your profile on social media and grow a compelling personal brand that attracts the right audience and helps you to build your income. If you have all that in place then you are well on your way to making your first 6 figures as a freelancer and more.

Jump into freelancing. It lets you pick projects you like and work on your own terms. Build a strong portfolio to attract clients. Show them your best work. Stay connected. Most jobs come from people you know. Stay sharp. Always learn new skills and trends. You're your own boss in freelancing. Promote yourself on social media and other platforms.

In today’s digital era where there is no boundaries between countries to offer your skills, you can do freelancing for something that you passionate the most and you are really good at it. You can earn more than your previous job. You can set your own tariffs, time and choose the work as you like, it might be a little struggling in the beginning but when you manage it, it can be your winning carrier.

Despite being in the industry for quite some time, my topmost advice to fellow Copywriters is to NEVER STOP learning. Digital content continuously evolves and it's up to us copywriters to also continuously upskill to catch up on the latest trends and needs of the market. As long as you are armed with enough (and updated) knowledge, a lay-off wouldn't feel as daunting as before — as you know your value and is confident enough to present what services you can offer.

Your ability to distill complex ideas into digestible language makes you well-suited for this role. Look for opportunities as a UX writer or content designer, where you can contribute to enhancing the overall user experience of digital products and services.

Consider work that does not have the title “copywriter” in the title. And consider starting your own business using the skills you’ve gained with your experience. Consider doing things that might be a little scary to someone who might be used to traditional employment. And understand that failure is a stepping stone to success. If something doesn’t work, just try something else. One day it will work better then you might have ever dreamed possible.

Well, in my opinion, one just have to prepare for the unexpected. Before any layoffs, one can: 1. Explore other skills like digital marketing, Email marketing, or any other job opportunity that can give you quality exposure and experience 2. Always have plan-B. Never run dry of options to avoid being stucked 3. Avoid isolation, this is very important. Build quality relationships and collaborate with other people whether within your workplace or outside your work reach. Let it be your valuable asset for more opportunities. Your kind of association you have is proportional to the extent of allocation within your reach. 4. Practice Networking

Explore different styles of writing and what resonate with you and your writing. When you do copywriting for corporate clients only, you’re more familiar with writing in a corporate tone. During the layoff period just take time to see and explore other ways of writing and methods, then try to get into freelancing and don’t be afraid to show your insights or journey. This helps show potential clients how you craft your ideas and writing. Show what you are experienced in and how the new method has given you a new perspective on writing copy and representing brands in their communication

Most people give up too soon and it remains less competition for the rest. So it’s a free advise to stick with it for a long time.

Layoff is always a nightmare. The private job sector has no long-term security. So, embrace your skills no matter whether you are working or seeking a job opportunity. Update your knowledge and nourish your network. You will always be able to handle all situations. Good Luck : )
