What do you do if you're an IT consultant looking to advance your skills in your late career?

At 50 years of age, I had to dig deep, I had been an entrepreneur all my life. I needed more intellectual challenge and I was no longer fulfilled by my day to day work. I went back to school, completed my bachelor's degree then on to masters. While studying, and working full time, I found my calling to become a professor, I felt a need to contribute and to keep growing. I am now teaching in a public college, I push myself and I am happy. Look in you and find your interest and calling even if it is not your actual line of work, that will fuel the motivation to take this fork in the road. Enjoy life grow and keep moving.

First step is to identify your areas of strength and expertise. This will help you determine which direction you want to focus your growth. Second step is to identify your interest. Ask yourself a question "What part of the IT industry interests me?" Got the answer? Now start aligning this interest toward your skill development.

Adopting a growth mindset is one of the most effective ways to advance your skills in your later career. Carol Dweck's book Mindset is a great guide. 1) Mentoring is a powerful way to connect with younger professionals and learn and gain perspective on new skills such as Agile, Scrum, etc. 2) Gain new perspectives publications such as Wired, Fast Company, etc. 3) Focus on leveraging your strengths. Embrace new techniques to do tasks with which you are already experienced. Since you are in late career you will already have deep experience with IT fundamentals such as determining requirements, systems integration, setting up SLAs etc. Those things don't change so much—what does change is the use of new tools and techniques for doing them.

You can display technical certifications from providers like AWS, Azure, HPE, and Cisco on platforms like Credly as proof of your abilities. From my experience, what really stands out to others is a public portfolio of your projects.

Becoming an expert in your field is something a lot of people aim for, and while there is nothing wrong with this there is high value in knowing about other skills as well. Diversifying your skills allows you to overcome issues that might be overlooked in other cases. Take the position of a web developer with UI/UX knowledge, this could greatly improve their work as they are familiar with both the user and technical needs.

Further your knowledge: Although it is useful to explore new areas, think about concentrating on a certain part of IT in which they are already specialized. Broaden Your Horizons: Also, think about crossing over other disciplines such as business analysis, project management and user experience (UX) design. Planning your retirement, as suggested in the title, seems like an attractive option at first glance, but... is it really? I think that retirement is not for everyone. I think it is much better to balance work and free time well, perhaps choosing to do only the most interesting jobs. But I think I'll postpone retirement as much as possible.

First of all, you need a vision on what’s next. Same skills in a new market?Update skills in your target? New role in your target? So: 1- Visualize what do you wanna be, define your ‘To be’ 2- ask your customer what will be their ‘to be’, ask for advice 3-assess your skill respect the next ‘to Be’ 4- fill the gap 5- update your customer that you are ready for the next ‘to be’ 7-find one customer to create a success case 6- never talk about retirement
