The single biggest strategic problem of our time is whether incumbents should pursue a single track, a dual track, or a multi-track strategy. Taking Germany as an example, the last Federal budget was unconstitutional. EBV subsidies stopped and already too low demand collapsed. Automotive manufacturers now refocus on ICEs simply because this promises the much greater lever. German technical EBV capability might come to a halt. The EU is contemplating a phase-out of the ICE phase out and punitive import duties on Chinese EBVs. German EBVs might well suffer the same fate as the German PV industry: Modern cars consist of software and batteries, software comes from the US and batteries from China. Now, place your bet: On EBVs or ICEs or both?

In automotive, market trends are currently very much determined by public policy and the presence or absence of a corresponding state aid and subsidies framework. If the EU fails for example to subsidize EU-made EBVs in, and tax Chinese EBVs out (through punitive import taxes and non-tariff obstacles), the European mobility transition will be a failure, and the European car industry be badly damaged. It follows that car manufacturers must effectively lobby politics to help create a regulatory environment that furthers stable EBV demand, now, so to secure the European car industry tomorrow.

One key strategic cost analysis relates to the question, how can car manufactures ensure that their ICE supply chain will not be destroyed by their move towards EBVs, just in case it will be needed potentially decades longer than currently anticipated? At viable prices? Car manufacturers like to have several suppliers for each component, and to play those out against each other to always be the dominant player. With the industry move towards EBVs, several ICE part suppliers will go out of business because of shrinking volumes. Car manufacturers will be unable to subsidize diverse supplier survival, supplier monopolies might be created, and ICE part prices may well rise.

Define assets and goals. There are 3 ways. * Make investment to yourself, people and tooling and do it by yourself which takes time of course forming the culture and qualifications * Make outsource the complete project * Make outsource the complete or parts of the project and make some internalization afterwards or during it. Personally I prefer #1 which is more challenging and more rewarding.
